U.S. crop prices were under pressure again Wednesday following a prominent advisory firm unveiling the results of their August yield survey, similar to USDA and others which found corn and soybean yields both above trend. Despite a challenging August for weather in some areas and declining crop conditions in Tuesday's update from USDA, traders are currently seeing very little supply risk as 2025 harvest grows nearer each day. Outside markets on Wednesday were mixed, with equities again on the retreat from last week's highs ahead of what is typically a tough month of September. Meanwhile, energy markets were lower on rumors of another OPEC+ production increase coming in October, which weighed on soybean oil prices which headed to their sixth loss in the past seven sessions.

Live cattle futures moved lower during the session on Wednesday, although compared to the rest of the livestock market, the live cattle complex seemed to be hold the best of all markets. October futures were leading the downward shift in morning losses, but it is important to remember that just because prices are not continuing the aggressive rocket-like shift higher, this does not mean that the market is at or near its top. As of last week, traders continue to maintain a strong net long position in the cattle market in general, and specifically live cattle futures point to continued optimism and positive expectations for price levels in the days and weeks to come. More focus is shifting to the ability to continue to move wholesale and retail beef levels and maintain current or higher price levels now that the summer grilling season is wrapping up. Cash cattle activity has been sluggish once again, with a slow start to the day; bids and asking prices are not established.

Producers’ perspectives on current conditions changed little during the month, with the Current Conditions Index rising two points from July to 129 in August.

The U.S. ag trade deficit hit a record high in the first half of this year. Bloomberg said the value of agricultural exports trailed that of imports by $4.1 billion in June, a gap 14 percent wider than a year earlier. USDA data says that pushed the ag sector’s deficit to a staggering $28.6 billion for the first six months of this year. Reports say the trade deficit is one of the main reasons President Trump gave for imposing tariffs and working on new trade deals. 

Former USDA chief economist Joe Glauber said that the trade imbalance shouldn’t be this alarming because of what’s under the surface. He said it’s important to keep in mind that America imports a lot of commodities it can’t produce domestically. The USDA numbers show that Mexico and Canada will remain the top two U.S. ag export markets, followed by the EU, Japan, and China.

Is the U.S. corn and soybean crop getting smaller?

There's continued evidence that we may once again experience some low water conditions on the lower Mississippi River this fall. The prospects for restricted barge transportation this fall may come as a surprise for many given the healthy amounts of rainfall throughout much of the Midwest this spring and summer. However, the spigot has mostly been turned off throughout August – particularly in states that feed into the Ohio River, which feeds the Mississippi. 

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 60% of the water volume on the Mississippi River south of Cairo, Illinois (where the Ohio River merges into the Mississippi River), is provided by the Ohio River.  As a result, low water volumes on the Ohio River will often translate to low water volumes on the lower Mississippi River.  The higher water levels at St. Louis reflect the amount of precipitation in the adjacent regions throughout the spring and summer, which was most beneficial.

Concerns over Mississippi River levels as harvest approaches

Friday's trade featured month-end position-squaring as short-side traders raced to book profits while also avoiding the beginning of the delivery period for September futures contracts next week. The firm corn market offered support to soybean and wheat futures, both recovering from a sluggish start Friday to finish higher heading into the long weekend. In outside markets, equity markets relaxed into month end following three straight sessions higher. Energy markets were lower in a continuation of mixed trade overall through this week. Treasury yields were mostly lower as well as Personal Consumption Expenditure data on Friday morning showed that consumers in July remained avid spenders despite generally higher prices. The key inflation metric fell within expectations and the Federal Reserve is likely to have all the supporting features in place to cut its target rate by a quarter point in next month's meeting.

The live cattle complex got back to trading higher as traders are again finding support in the market's slightly higher cash cattle trade. It's unlikely that traders will challenge the market's resistance at $240 unless something wild and dramatic develops in the fed cash cattle market. But at this point, it's looking like some more trade could develop, but prices may hold steady with the week's trend. So far this week Southern live cattle have traded at mostly $242, which is $2.00 higher than last week's weighted average and Northern dressed cattle have traded at mostly $385, which is $1.00 lower than last week's weighted average.

Following Thursday's lower close, the feeder cattle complex also got back to trading higher as traders are no longer up against immediate resistance levels. Demand in the countryside remains incredibly strong, so today's recovery in the futures sector is a move based upon continued support of the market's fundamentals and because the contracts are no longer teetering at resistance levels.

If the lean hog complex rounded out the day higher, and an incredible week for the market, as the contracts closed higher every day this week. And although pork cutout values were higher this morning, demand has been softer than usual, so this week's momentum in the marketplace has largely been driven by traders. The big change in the carcass price came because of the $14.23 jump in the belly and because of the $11.60 jump in the picnic.

Cases of New World screwworm infections in Mexico have climbed by more than 50 percent since July. As of August 17, reports show, Mexico has documented 5,086 cases of the flesh-eating screwworm in animals, a 53 percent rise from July, according to numbers released by the Mexican government. The updated numbers previously unavailable to the public show 649 currently active cases of screwworm infections. 

“That’s incredibly concerning,” said Neal Wilkins. He told reporters that a fifty percent increase in the number of cases from July to August, particularly in extreme heat, means that Mexico hasn’t gotten the parasite under control. An NCBA spokesman said the increase in the number of NWS cases shows that the New World screwworm is a very present and real threat. Reports say the increase in the number of reported cases likely comes from Mexican cattle producers more closely inspecting their cattle and reporting any suspicious wounds or pests.

That’s according to the monthly survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a ten-state region dependent on agriculture or energy. The overall reading for August dropped to 48.1 after rising above growth-neutral to 50.6 in July and 51.9 in June. The index ranges between 0 and 100, with a reading of 50.0 representing neutral growth. 

Dr. Ernie Goss of Creighton University says “Weak agriculture commodity prices for grain producers continue to dampen economic activity in the ten-state region,” and “Bank CEOs and chief loan officers expect almost one-fifth, or 20 percent, of grain farmers to experience negative cash flow for 2025.” As current prices for corn and soybeans are still below break-even, the majority of the state’s producers will struggle to show operational profitability.

Ag markets appeared to be on their way to a continuation of Wednesday's lower drift before buying interest picked up late in the session. Traders are displaying a bit of uncertainty on where to send prices next given on one hand the large supplies that appear to be coming this fall, but on the other hand a dry August which may very well have trimmed the top end off yield potential for the southern and eastern Grain Belt. Outside markets for Thursday were very quiet with equities moving cautiously higher, with the S&amp;P500 extending Wednesday's record move. Energy markets also reversed higher off a softer tone early Thursday in what has been an overall sideways week in that sector.

Following Wednesday's higher close, the live cattle complex traded lower at the closing bell as traders seem to be keeping the market on hold, waiting to see what else surfaces from a fundamental sense before they push the contracts any higher. Packer interest could improve at any moment, but for the time being, not a single bid is on the table. Asking prices are noted in the South at $245, but are still not established in the North. It's assumed that prices will trade steady if not a bit higher again this week as feedlot managers sit with enough leverage to simply roll their showlists over into next week if prices aren't what they want.

The live cattle contracts trading lower, had the feeder cattle complex change its direction as the market watched support erode and send the contracts tumbling. Feeder cattle demand remains utterly incredible, and with buyers showing no clear signs of slowing down, traders feel comfortable allowing the contracts to continue to trade as they will and follow the live cattle market into the red.

The lean hog complex is keeping with its upward trek and not seeming too phased by the market's resistance at $94.00. What's pretty incredible about traders' recent move is that they're doing it with little to no fundamental support. Although pork cutout values were a tick higher this morning, demand has been weaker this week, and it's looking like packers are mostly done buying the cash market, as prices couldn't be posted this morning because of confidentiality.

The National Corn Growers Association issued a report saying corn prices have dropped about 50 percent since hitting a peak in 2022. However, the cost of production has declined only modestly, making the production of corn unprofitable. The group said despite the plunging prices, the cost of growing an acre of corn this year is down only 3.3 percent from when prices topped out in 2022. 

“This is particularly problematic for farmers trying to cash flow high production costs while the corn price has tanked,” NCGA said in the report. Production of the grain is set to reach 16.742 billion bushels on a yield of 188.8 bushels per acre in the 2025-2026 marketing year. The average cost to grow a bushel of corn this year is projected at approximately $4.75 a bushel, and USDA expects farmers to receive about $3.90 per bushel, resulting in an 85-cent per bushel loss. 

The National Corn Growers Association issued a report saying corn prices have dropped about 50 percent since hitting a peak in 2022. However, the cost of production has declined only modestly, making the production of corn unprofitable. The group said despite the plunging prices, the cost of growing an acre of corn this year is down only 3.3 percent from when prices topped out in 2022. “This is particularly problematic for farmers trying to cash flow high production costs while the corn price has tanked,” NCGA said in the report. Production of the grain is set to reach 16.742 billion bushels on a yield of 188.8 bushels per acre in the 2025-2026 marketing year. R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard indicated that neither the CDC nor the USDA had disclosed the NWS detection to the public. Instead, one or both agencies had selectively notified only certain industry participants of the detection, thereby giving them insider information regarding an issue with potentially severe ramifications. Why the delay in reporting the screwworm?

December corn closed down 3 1/2 cents, March corn was down 3 1/4 cents. November soybeans closed down 2 cents and January soybeans were down 2 1/2 cents. December KC wheat closed down 4 3/4 cents, December Chicago wheat was down 7 1/2 cents, December Minneapolis wheat was down 13 cents.

Corn and wheat markets slipped lower again Wednesday, with wheat breaking back toward calendar year lows for most active futures after a disappointing technical close Tuesday, adding pressure to the corn market as well. Wednesday morning's EIA Petroleum Status Report also showed a weekly drawdown in U.S. crude, gasoline, and diesel stocks. U.S. equity markets have climbed at midweek ahead of key earnings results.

Almost seeming to double down and show all its power and might, the live cattle complex jolted higher through Wednesday's early trade. The market sold off and came right back in a matter of minutes to finish higher on the session. Wednesday's move comes somewhat as a surprise because midday boxed beef prices were lower, and the fed cash cattle market hasn't seen any cattle trade just yet. So, while I'd typically point to the market fundamentals for reason, today's powerful move is seeming to be a decision made solely based upon the market's technical position as traders continue to respect the long-term bullishness of the cattle complex. A single bid is currently on the table in Nebraska at $245, but still no cattle have traded. Southern asking prices are firm at $243 but are still not established in the North. Trade will likely be delayed until Thursday or Friday.

The feeder cattle complex took on the same rallying mannerisms of the live cattle market as traders continue to show respect and give credence to the market's unwavering, long-term fundamental position. I do think it's worth noting that again today the contracts that are seeing the biggest gains are the deferred months as traders are realizing that supplies aren't going to become greater any time soon.

Keeping with the same gusto it possessed Tuesday, the lean hog complex was thriving as the market neared Wednesday's closing bell. And again today, the market can't point to its fundamentals as support as both cash prices and pork cutout values were lower; so instead, today's energy is solely being driven by eager traders who see an opportunity.

CoBank says improvements in beef quality and the increased availability of premium-grade cuts at retail have played a big role in driving demand. Brian Earnst, lead animal protein analyst, says access to high-quality beef has never been better, and American consumers have developed a taste for it.

The Federal Reserve’s Ninth District in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has enjoyed good weather for crop production, but crop prices haven’t been friendly to farmers’ pocketbooks. A North Dakota farm lender told the Federal Reserve that, “High operating costs and lower grain prices are the biggest concerns.” Lenders responding to the second quarter Ag Credit Survey said farm incomes decreased across the Ninth District.

Lenders also reported that spending on capital equipment fell, and farm household purchases edged lower on balance. Around the district, 91 percent of the agricultural lenders said incomes decreased from April through June compared to the same period a year ago. With the weaker cash position, demand for loans rose sharply. Loan repayments also dropped, and loan renewal and extension activity increased. Interest rates for agricultural loans decreased slightly but remained high. Cropland values in the Ninth District were mixed, while cash rents dropped compared to last year.

The worry and concern that plagued Monday's live cattle market regarding the case where a traveler who was traveling abroad tested positive for New World screwworm in Maryland no longer seems to be at the forefront of the market's mind anymore. Currently, the October contract is trading at a new contract high as traders seem to be pressing onward aggressively and are encouraged to see boxed beef prices up as much as they are. Still no cash cattle trade has developed, but asking prices are noted in the South at $243, and remain unestablished in the North.

The feeder cattle complex was trading throughout the day with vengeance as the market gapped higher this morning and hasn't looked back since. And with the notable gain seen yesterday in feeder cattle sales across the country, the fundamental support is there for traders to make this kind of move.

Although morning pork cutout values were a tick lower, the lean hog complex challenged the market's resistance in the spot October contract, as currently, trader support is more than ample. There's a chance that with morning pork cutout values lower than traders could become weary at any point in time, but at this moment, support and stronger trends seem to be the market's trajectory.

Human case of New World Screwworm confirmed in the U.S.

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.9 million head on August 1st. That was two percent below the mark in 2024, and in line with pre-report trade estimates of 98.1 percent. Reports show the August 1 level is an eight-year low. 

The state-by-state breakdown showed a steady increase across most of the states, but compared to a year ago, the Southern feedlots were well below 2024 levels. That’s because of the closure of the Southern U.S. border to Mexican feeder imports. The northern feeder areas were said to be above year-ago levels. Texas placements were at 75 percent of last year, Colorado was 76 percent, Nebraska was at 98 percent, while Kansas and Iowa were at 102 and 118 percent, respectively. Feedlot placements in July were 1.6 million head, six percent below last year.

September corn closed up 1 cent and December corn was up 3/4 cent. September soybeans closed down 11 cents and November soybeans were down 10 3/4 cents. September KC wheat closed down 1 1/4 cents, September Chicago wheat was up 2 cents, September Minneapolis wheat was up 3 1/2 cents.

Markets were firm for the most part out of the gate to begin the new week Sunday evening, but prices eventually faded from highs through the Monday day session. Despite some recent reasons for bullishness, traders remain cautious of the potential for very large U.S. crops this fall. In outside markets, equities relaxed to start the week following Friday's Fed-related rally. Meanwhile, energy markets are continuing their rally from late last week primarily driven as peace discussions between Russia and Ukraine are thus far nonexistent following the Trump/Putin Summit ten days ago.

It's was a tumultuous morning for the live cattle complex as news broke over the weekend from the CDC that a person traveling abroad in Maryland was infected with New World screwworm. The news obviously affected the cattle complex dramatically as strict measures have been taken with cattle imports to avoid the spread into the U.S., but thinking that it would be carried into the US through a human wasn't on most people's radar. And although the news regarding the positive case of New World screwworm has most affected the marketplace, it hasn't helped matters either that the market received a neutral to somewhat bearish Cattle on Feed report last week, as most analysts thought placements would be lighter than what they were. New showlists appear to be lower in all major feeding areas.

The feeder cattle complex was traded mostly lower as traders are uncertain what to do with the complex following the CDC's announcement. The contracts were trading close to their limit lower this morning, but then recovered a bulk of the position and at the closing bell only trading mildly lower.

The lean hog complex had a prosperous morning as the contracts traded fully higher. It was helpful to see pork cutout values were stronger again this morning -- but that's mainly because of the continued aggressive rally in the picnic, which was up $8.75.

December KC wheat closed down 5 cents at $5.21, December Chicago wheat was down 2 1/2 cents at $5.27 1/4 and December Minneapolis wheat was unchanged cents at $5.90.

December corn finished 6 1/4 cents higher at $4.11 1/2. March corn also finished 6 1/4 cents higher at $4.28 3/4. November beans rose 16 cents for the week at $10.58 1/2 and January beans finished up 15 1/2 cents at $10.77. Kansas City September closed down 9 at $4.98, Chicago September finished down 1 3/4, and Minneapolis December finished up .0075 at $5.90.

Soybeans got a boost and rose for the second straight day. Although pod counts are being reported as record large in several key states, it is the drier outlook ahead that has traders buying. Also supportive for soybeans was the bean oil strength and the EPA decision to grant full waivers for only 63 of the petitions with partial waivers and some not approved at all. Wheat and corn flirted with both sides in slow trade Friday.

The live cattle complex continued to trade higher and higher as support remains plentiful for the market. Boxed beef demand has been stellar this week, and although we'd just seen a small trading thus far in the fed cash cattle complex, prices have been higher in the North. It's normal for traders to pull the contracts back somewhat ahead of the release of the monthly Cattle on Feed report, but at this point, it's looking like there's enough support in the marketplace to ease traders' nervousness about the report to continue to push the contracts higher.

A new day, and another new contract high summarizes the feeder cattle complex at this point. It will be interesting to note what happens on the monthly Cattle on Feed report as placements are expected to be lighter than a year ago, but how much lighter once again remains the question to be answered. It's been an incredible week for the feeder cattle complex as the market has been able to close higher every single day.

The lean hog complex made a late-week rally as the nearby contracts were successful trading upward of $1.00 higher into Friday's noon hour. Some of the market's support is stemming from the strong fundamental showing late in the week, but more than that, it seems that traders have regained their confidence, as fundamental support throughout the week has been spotty.

Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins said the USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose two million acres by 2027. 

This problem isn’t just in Tennessee, because, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by almost 50 percent. That’s why the Department took action. “Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with Green New Deal-subsidized solar panels,” Rollins said. “One of the biggest barriers to entry for new and young farmers is access to land, and subsidized solar farms are making land much more expensive and less available.”

The U.S. and the European Union announced that they’ve agreed on a Framework of an Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair, and Balanced Trade. Among the key terms, the EU intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and provide preferential market access for a wide range of U.S. seafood and agricultural goods, including dairy products, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, soybean oil, pork, and other products. 

The U.S. commits to applying the higher of either the U.S. Most Favored Nation Tariff Rate or a tariff rate of 15 percent, comprised of the MFN tariff and a reciprocal tariff, on originating goods from the European Union. Among some of the other commitments, the U.S. and EU share one of the world’s largest economic relationships. European companies commit to invest an additional $600 billion across strategic U.S. sectors through 2028. They’ll also work to eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers.

U.S. and E.U. issue a joint statement on trade framework

November soybeans closed up 20 cents at $10.56 0/1 and January soybeans were up 18 1/2 cents at $10.73 3/4. December KC wheat closed up 2 3/4 cents at $5.26, December Chicago wheat was up 1 1/2 cents at $5.29 3/4 and December Minneapolis wheat was up 0.02 cents at $5.9100.

Both the corn and soy markets surged Thursday as the next 10 days holds a dry outlook for the Eastern Corn Belt and crop tour participants are finding diseases more prevalent than thought. Soybean oil rallied ahead of what is expected to be a decision on small refinery exemptions soon. Wheat markets were along for the ride in two-sided trade but in the end finished mixed to slightly higher.

Following Wednesday's massive surge in the futures complex, the live cattle complex&nbsp;traded mostly steady, seeming unsure of what it should do next. It remains incredibly supportive that boxed beef prices are continuing to trend higher, but the market has yet to really see what this week's trend is going to be in the fed cash cattle complex. There's been a light movement in the North at $245, which is steady to a tick higher than last week's weighted average, but the market hasn't seen enough trade, or any trade in the South, to say that it confidently knows what this week's trend is going to be. Regardless, it's anticipated that prices will trade at least steady if not a bit higher again this week simply because feedlot managers possess enough leverage in the marketplace to be able to roll their showlists over if prices aren't what they want. From a technical standpoint, it's impressive to see that futures contracts are trading mostly steady as traders want to support the complex more but also don't want to overdo anything.

The feeder cattle complex&nbsp;continued to trade mostly higher into Thursday's close after a rough start to the session, as traders are seeing plenty of support. Support from feeder cattle sales in the countryside, support from strong boxed beef demand, support from the light movement that the fed cash cattle complex has seen already this week, and, as of this point this week, total support from traders.

Although pork cutout values were down slightly, and the week's export report wasn't overly supportive, the lean hog complex traded mostly higher into Thursday's closing bell as traders have seemed to find some footing in the futures complex. The bulk of this week's cash hog trade is likely done, so any fundamental support is going to need to come from cutout values, and this morning the carcass price was down slightly.

Local opposition to utility-scale solar installations in rural areas is growing following the rapid pace of new solar developments in recent years. Land use concerns in areas largely dominated by agricultural production are fueling much of the community-level resistance. A new CoBank report says solar expansion could deliver the fastest, most affordable means for increasing the nation’s razor-thin energy reserves while driving new revenue streams for rural communities. 

CoBank says concerns around the pace of solar development in rural areas and the implications for land use in agricultural regions are warranted. A recent independent study found that about 15 percent of U.S. counties have some form of restriction on building new utility-scale solar energy projects. American Farmland Trust says more than 80 percent of new solar development will take place on agricultural lands over the next 20 years, with almost half that development on what’s considered “prime” land.
