September corn closed up 2 1/4 cents and December corn was up 3 1/2 cents. August soybeans closed up 2 cents and November soybeans were up 1 1/4 cents. September KC wheat closed down 6 1/4 cents, September Chicago wheat was down 7 1/4 cents, September Minneapolis wheat was down 1 3/4 cents.

Grain and oilseed markets were mixed to mostly positive on Thursday. Markets closed moderately below daily highs amid technical resistance ahead of the long weekend, with traders not quite willing to extend bullish price bets to the next level with the nearby weather outlook still appearing mostly favorable for growing crops. At this point, the rally is primarily driven by short covering ahead of the holiday break, with no significant changes to the underlying fundamental picture for row crop markets. Meanwhile, investors and traders spent the session awaiting the final House of Representative vote on the 2025 Budget bill. The final vote was delayed but eventually the bill did pass just minutes after the close of trade for Thursday, sending the legislation to President Trump's desk by Independence Day.

It's refreshing to see the live cattle complex traded fully higher into Thursday's close, and to see the spot August contracts fully and confidently trading above the market's 40-day moving average. At this point, it seems safe to assume that traders feel as if the market has endured enough immediate pressure, but it will be imperative that fundamental support begins to improve early next week if traders are going to keep with their current upward trend. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that the fed cash cattle will be able to trade higher as packers continue to build up supply around themselves, and at some point, boxed beef prices will likely break to fit the seasonal norm.

With the continued support of seeing the live cattle contracts trading higher, the feeder cattle market also traded fully higher into Thursday's close. It will be especially interesting to see if Superior's Week in the Rockies sale (which happens all of next week) will be as strong as the Corn Belt Classic was. From a demand perspective, buyers are still in desperate need of calves, but the concern at the back of cow-calf producers' minds is that some buyers could elect to see how aggressive an influx of Mexican feeder cattle imports is going to be. And if that will give them another avenue to buy from and at a cheaper price.

It's been a tough fundamental week for the lean hog complex. Couple the dip in consumer demand with this morning's lousy export report, and it's no surprise that the contracts were trading lower into Thursday's closing bell. In this morning's pork cutout report, no major declines were seen, but with most of the cuts trading lower, that was enough pressure to push the carcass price lower, too.

The “Farmers’ Share of the Food Dollar,” released this week, highlights how little family farmers earn compared to how much consumers pay at the grocery store. Family farmers get only a small fraction of their income from popular Independence Day foods, an average of as low as 16.3 percent of a $30 shopping cart. 

For example, one pound of ground beef costs an average of $5.99 a pound, and the farmer’s share is $2.08. The U.S. Dollar Index is down 0.03 at 96.79. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 39.0 points at 44,768.0. August gold is up $13.10 at $3,362.90, September silver is up $0.34 at $36.74 and September copper is up $0.1090. August crude oil is up $1.95 at $67.40, August ultra-low sulfur diesel is up $0.0795, August RBOB gasoline is up $0.0207 and August natural gas is up $0.071.

September corn futures closed up 12 cents to $4.18. December futures were up 11 1/2 cents to $4.33 1/2. In overnight trade, September futures appeared primed to test the $4.00 mark again and traded as low as $4.02 before buyers stepped in to ultimately send prices up 16 cents off the low by the close. It could be we are seeing traders' express satisfaction that the surge in recent bearish bias for the corn market is adequately priced in at this point.

Tuesday's Grain Crushing's report was neutral for the most part. Corn used for ethanol in May was 449.4 million bushels (mb), in line with expectations but about 1.3% less than in May 2024. In fact, monthly corn grind has fallen below the respective month from 2024 in four out of the past six months. Corn grind will need to average 473 mb per month over the final quarter of the marketing year to hit the USDA goal of 5.5 billion bushels (bb). At this point this seems like a stretch; I personally have lowered my estimate for 2024-25 corn crush to 5.45 bb. The Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that last week's ethanol production averaged 1.076 million barrels per day, the third straight weekly decline but still larger than the previous 4-year average for the same week.

In corn technicals, December futures rose to post their highest close since June 23. Prices once again were supported in the $4.15 to $4.20 range. The close back above the former contract low at $4.28 is a positive technical achievement. The short-term bullish objective should be to return prices to downtrend resistance in the upper $4.30s.

The DTN National Corn Index finished Tuesday at $3.92. Wednesday's futures close and implied corn basis of 14 cents under the September board would indicate the index on Wednesday afternoon to be near $4.04.

August soybeans surged 23 3/4 cents on Wednesday to $10.53 1/2. New-crop November soybeans followed suit, up 20 3/4 cents to $10.48. It was all around bullish session for the soybean complex as soybean oil futures started the session strong with a gap higher, pulling soybeans along for the ride but the market really took off midmorning with the announcement of the trade deal with Vietnam, which injected a new shot of trade optimism into the market.

Tuesday's Fats and Oils report was overall strong. USDA reported soybeans crushed in May totaled 203.68 mb, just slightly less than I was anticipating but still the strongest May on record at 6% higher than May 2024. The U.S. crush industry has only posted two months through the marketing year thus far at less than 200 mb, keeping the program on pace to hit the USDA goal of 2.420 bb of crush if not slightly more. I personally am penciling 2.425 bb for the marketing year. Also supportive were historically low soybean oil stocks for the end of May/beginning of June at 1.4 billion pounds, 19% less than in May 2024. Meanwhile meal stocks were 36% larger than in May 2024, adding to supply woes in that market. However, meal futures traded higher Wednesday as well amid a very technically oversold market in the short term as well as overwhelmingly positive influence from the soybean market.

In regard to the trade agreement with Vietnam, it is possible traders are viewing it more as a show of optimism that similar agreements will ultimately be reached with trading partners such as Japan and most importantly for soybeans, China. Vietnam is certainly no slouch in the soybean trade however, importing 38.75 mb of soybeans from the U.S. in 2024, good for ninth among buying countries.

In soybean technicals, November futures erupted through the major moving averages in the $10.35 to $10.40 range and have now reclaimed about 50% of last week's losses back to the June 18 high. $10.50 may be the next source of resistance for a sustained move higher. To the downside, a test of the 50-day moving average near $10.36 1/2 currently for support seems likely and will be an important technical test for gauging the staying power of the emerging price rally.

The DTN National Soybean Index finished Tuesday at $9.76. Wednesday's futures close and implied soybean basis of 54 cents under the August board would indicate the index on Wednesday afternoon to be near $10.00.

September Kansas City wheat closed 11 cents higher on Wednesday to $5.42 1/4. September Chicago wheat was 15 cents higher while MIAX Minneapolis September spring wheat was 20 1/2 cents higher. The spring wheat market continues to be the bull of the wheat complex, driven by lower year-over-year acreage and expanding drought concerns for Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington. Winter wheat prices were able to shake off harvest pressure on Wednesday, riding a wave of overarching grain market positivity to close higher by double digits as well.

In world wheat markets, Paris milling futures recovered from a rough past week of trade which sent prices back near 2025 lows. The intense heat wave may be worth keeping an eye on for adverse effects, although the majority of the wheat is mature at this point and harvest just around the corner. In Russia, the International Grains Council (IGC) reported winter wheat harvest is 1% complete as of the end of June, a slow start to harvest which supported export offers through the past week although Russian offers still remain among the least expensive in the world according to the weekly IGC report.

In wheat technicals, September KC futures were able to move back above support at $5.37 on Wednesday, which will be an important level to watch for a retest in coming sessions. The 20-day and 50-day moving averages just below $5.50 are the immediate bullish target for a further retracement of last week's losses. The next round of support is currently seen near $4.27.

USDA - after extensive collaboration between the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service experts and their counterparts in Mexico to increase New World screwworm surveillance, detection, and eradication efforts - is set to begin a phased reopening of the southern ports, starting with Douglas, Arizona. 

Progress has been made in several critical areas since the ports were closed on May 11, including the resolution of challenges with conducting flights in Mexico that allowed the USDA team to consistently conduct sterile NWS fly dispersal seven days a week and the dispersal of more than 100 million flies each week. “We’ve focused on fighting the New World screwworm’s advancement in Mexico,” Rollins said. “We have made good progress with our counterparts in Mexico to increase surveillance efforts and have boosted sterile fly dispersal efforts.”

Farmer sentiment weakened in June following two months of improvement. The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer dropped 12 points from the previous month to 146. A change in producers’ expectations for the future served as the primary factor in the shift. The Index of Future Expectations sank 18 points to 146. However, the Current Conditions Index only lost two points to 144. 

A drop in optimism about future agricultural exports seems to have influenced producers’ weakened outlook. Even with the June declines, all three indexes persist at higher levels than a year ago. The Farm Financial Performance Index dropped five points to 104, with producers projecting a slightly weaker financial outlook for their farms in June compared to May. An index above 100 indicates that U.S. farmers expect a stronger financial performance in 2025 than in 2024. The Farm Capital Investment Index rose five points in June to 60.

September corn closed down 3 1/4 cents and December corn was down 3 1/2 cents. August soybeans closed unchanged, and November soybeans were up 1/4 cent. September KC wheat closed up 4 1/2 cents, September Chicago wheat was up 10 3/4 cents and September Minneapolis wheat was up 7 3/4 cents.

Grain and oilseed markets recovered from overnight losses to trade well off session lows, with price action following USDA clues given in Monday's Crop Progress report. For now, it would appear markets have moved past Monday's Acreage and Stocks data, with traders likely eager to see what the weather holds as spring crops prepare to enter a crucial period for development. Outside market influence on Tuesday was mixed, with energy markets quietly higher and stocks mixed to mostly higher. Headline news for Tuesday was the Senate passing President Trump's budget bill by a vote of 51-50, with Vice President Vance casting the deciding vote. The bill now returns to the House, where Senate revisions will be voted on.

Although the live cattle contracts did not react as drastically as the feeder cattle contracts to the USDA's announcement that some Mexican cattle imports will resume as early as July 5. The market still traded lower thanks to the bearish news. Still no cash cattle trade has developed. Asking prices are noted in the South at $225-plus, but are still not established in the North. Trade will likely be delayed for at least another day.

And just like that, the oxygen that seemed so bountiful in the feeder cattle complex has dried up as traders negatively reacted to the announcement that the US will begin to allow Mexican cattle Imports starting as soon as July 5. Nevertheless, the biggest concern that cattle producers have is how many cattle are now going to be allowed to cross the border? And how is that going to affect domestic prices? Unfortunately, time will have to answer those questions, but today's negative downturn is a psychological reaction to the announcement. The fact remains that even with Mexican feeder cattle imports, the US still will be short of feeder cattle, but the concern is that if imports flood the market, some of the upper echelon of the market could quickly disappear.

With cash prices lower and pork cutout values sharply lower, it comes as no real surprise that the lean hog complex is also traded no better than mixed into Tuesday's closing bell. Oddly enough today the biggest reason why the carcass price is lower is because the belly wass down $9.10 and the butt was down $6.69.

The bill now returns to the House, where Senate revisions will be voted on.LIVESTOCK:Although the live cattle contracts did not react as drastically as the feeder cattle contracts to the USDA's announcement that some Mexican cattle imports will resume as early as July 5. The market still traded lower thanks to the bearish news. Still no cash cattle trade has developed. Asking prices are noted in the South at $225-plus, but are still not established in the North. Trade will likely be delayed for at least another day.And just like that, the oxygen that seemed so bountiful in the feeder cattle complex has dried up as traders negatively reacted to the announcement that the US will begin to allow Mexican cattle Imports starting as soon as July 5. Nevertheless, the biggest concern that cattle producers have is how many cattle are now going to be allowed to cross the border? And how is that going to affect domestic prices? Unfortunately, time will have to answer those questions, but today's negative downturn is a psychological reaction to the announcement. The fact remains that even with Mexican feeder cattle imports, the US still will be short of feeder cattle, but the concern is that if imports flood the market, some of the upper echelon of the market could quickly disappear.With cash prices lower and pork cutout values sharply lower, it comes as no real surprise that the lean hog complex is also traded no better than mixed into Tuesday's closing bell. Growth Energy says Americans will potentially save over $10.1 billion in fuel costs this summer thanks to an emergency waiver issued this year by the Environmental Protection Agency. The waiver allowed for the continued sale of E15 throughout the summer. An analysis from Growth Energy says if American drivers choose E15 instead of the standard E10 this summer, they could collectively save more than 10.1 billion dollars. 

“Access to E15 is a win for American drivers and for American energy dominance,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. “This summer, up to $10.1 billion dollars is money that could go back into the pockets of working families, and we should never put those savings on hold.” Now that the waiver is in place, Growth Energy is pushing for Congress to make unrestricted access to E15 available year-round. Those savings will deliver relief for working families while creating jobs and economic growth.

The USDA’s Planted Acreage report shows more corn and fewer soybeans, wheat, and cotton acres. Corn planted area is estimated at just over 95 million acres in 2025, up by five percent from 2024. That’s the third-highest planted acres in the U.S. since 1944. The area harvested for grain is expected to be five percent higher than last year at nearly 87 million acres. 

Soybean planted area for 2025 is estimated at 83.5 million acres, down four percent from last year. The all-wheat planted area this year is estimated at 45.5 million acres, down one percent from 2024. The winter wheat planted area, at 33.3 million acres, is down less than one percent from last year but up slightly from the prior estimate. The all-cotton planted area for this year is estimated at 10.1 million acres, down ten percent from last year. The upland area is down nine percent from 2024.

Planted acreage report more corn, fewer soybeans

Grain markets were choppy but surprisingly calm following the release of the 2025 Acreage report and June 1 Stocks reports from USDA. The reports did hold a few surprises, but for the most part came in very close to what traders expected. It is likely the market will shift focus back to growing season weather and winter wheat harvests beginning with Monday afternoon's Crop Progress update from USDA. In outside markets, equities were firm following the announced resumption of trade discussions between the United States and Canada after Friday's ultimately brief spat over digital services tax. Meanwhile, energy markets remain an extremely narrow trade for the past four sessions following the ceasefire between Israel and Iran. The U.S. Dollar Index is pushing to new 2025 lows as market anxiety over tariffs and trade has returned to some degree ahead of the July 9 deadline for the 90-day tariff pause, with President Trump stating over the weekend there are no plans to extend the pause in most instances.

Believe it or not, the live cattle complex traded higher into Monday's close, following the large surge in which the market accomplished last Friday. More than anything traders seem to be looking at the market's regression and seem to believe that enough immediate downside pressure has been endured for the meantime. Now what's perplexing about that conclusion is that traders are willing to advance the contracts amid mixed market fundamentals: boxed beef prices continue to scale higher while fed cash cattle prices are drifting lower. Thankfully Friday's surge of the contracts helped push the spot August contract back above its 40-day moving average, which will continue to be a threshold to monitor. New showlists appear to be mixed, higher in Texas, and Nebraska/Colorado, but lower in Kansas.

Following the lead of the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle contracts also traded fully higher into Monday's closing bell. But even though the fed cash cattle market has been trading lower in recent weeks, the feeder cattle complex has remained consistent in the countryside as buyers continue to show up and buy aggressively as they need to fill their orders and there simply aren't enough calves to go around to do so in a relaxed manner. Given that this week is a holiday-shortened week for the Fourth of July, feeder cattle sales will be light.

While the cattle contracts were rallying, the lean hog complex continued with its downward trend as the market isn't seeing the fundamental support it needs currently. Pork cutout values were disturbing to look at this morning as the rib was down $16.25 and the ham down $6.79.

Kochia, a highly competitive weed well adapted to the Great Plains and western regions of the U.S. and Canada, has made its way to Missouri soybean fields. Wayne Flanary, University of Missouri Extension field specialist in agronomy, discovered large, scattered kochia plants in soybean fields in Atchison County, which borders Iowa to the north and Nebraska to the west. 

He noted that flooding along the Missouri River and its tributaries likely carried the weed into agricultural fields. Though the weed species is not new to Missouri, this may be the first report of kochia showing up in cropland in the state. Reports say the weed grows rapidly and aggressively outcompetes crops for water, nutrients and sunlight. It's also drought tolerant, producing up to 30,000 seeds per plant. These seeds have potential to germinate quickly -- within two or three hours under the right conditions.

Outside markets were mixed, as stock indices rose and the S&amp;P 500 set a new record high following the announcement from the Trump administration and subsequent confirmation from Chinese officials that the two countries had signed an agreement earlier this week to loosen trade restrictions with rare earths reportedly the focal point. Meanwhile, energy markets continue a quiet trade since the ceasefire between Israel and Iran was announced earlier this week.

Live cattle futures have followed the feeder cattle market higher, posting the first active gain in the complex in over a week. August futures lead the shift higher, as traders continue to focus on moderate to strong support still holding in wholesale beef prices. Triple-digit gains are seen through the entire complex as traders have found renewed support at $209 per cwt in August futures contracts. This underlying support through the entire market at the end of the week could help to solidify follow-through buying early next week. Although volume next week is still questionable, with the end of the month, and quarter seen early in the week, and markets closed at the end of the week due to the Independence Day holiday break.

Summer contracts were posting light to moderate gains Friday morning on strong financial market moves and indications that positive gains are seen in trade talks with China. October through April contracts were holding light losses as follow-through pressure after the hogs and pigs report Thursday limited buyer interest. Traders continue to be slightly disappointed that overall hog numbers have not eased. However, many of the adjustments seen Friday seem to be focused on backing away from pre-report positions rather than any major shift in market direction following the report. Nearby gains are supported based on strong continued demand, while long-term supply levels may continue to limit price support through the winter months.

This finding underscores the urgent need for new tools and integrated pest management strategies. Researchers encouraged U.S. beekeepers not to rely on amitraz as their primary mite control method, but to turn to a host of other available chemicals.

Bee colony collapse cue to resistant mites

It was a fairly quiet session across U.S. row-crop markets Thursday as selling pressure did relax somewhat but ultimately bullish traders were unable to make any ground back as corn, soybeans, and wheat markets all fell for a fifth consecutive session. Macro markets were mostly quiet as well, with stocks shaking off a sluggish second revision to first quarter U.S. GDP, with the S&amp;P500 nearing all-time highs again and a complete recovery of the tariff-induced dip in March.

Live cattle futures hovered in a narrow trading range through Thursday's session with limited early support in spot June contracts being offset by very limited and narrow losses in the rest of the complex. The support trickled in late and managed to push all contracts into the green. Traders see very little new direction in the market at the end of the week with the focus on cash market moves and the ability to sustain beef values heading into the holiday week. Overall trade may become increasingly sluggish next week due to the Fourth of July holiday, but traders still remain focused on the recent market support which has developed over the past two months, and continue to look for additional support to be seen in order to curb the current market correction seen over the past two weeks. Cash cattle markets are starting to slowly develop with a few bids on the table in parts of Nebraska. But they are well below current asking prices of around $228 to $230 in the South and $376-plus in the North. Packer inquiry will continue to improve as the day progresses. We are hearing a couple of packing plants will be dark or running with limited production today and/or Friday. The Grand Island, Nebraska, JBS plant will limit production due to flooding, heavy rainfall and lagoon issues; production is expected to drop to between 1,000 to 1,500 head, down from the usual 5,200 head. Tyson's facility in Amarillo, Texas, will be dark today and Friday due to labor issues, as workers vote on whether to strike or not. There is said to be picketing around the plant, with labor demands mostly centering around wages and more time off.

Feeder cattle futures were mixed with light but stable buyer support moving into nearby contracts throughout Thursday. Limited activity is expected to be seen through the rest of the week with traders looking for additional longer term direction from both cash cattle trade at the end of the week and outside market direction.

Lean hog futures posted light to moderate losses during trade Thursday. Traders continue to look ahead to the afternoon release of the June 1 Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report, but early expectations see significant fireworks from the report. Many feel overall hog numbers and breeding intentions will be fractionally changed from year ago levels. Given that these reports are quarterly in nature, most of the expected impact is likely already factored into the market over the past several weeks. But a surprise in the report could bring about some market shifts early Friday.

Cash cattle markets are starting to slowly develop with a few bids on the table in parts of Nebraska. But they are well below current asking prices of around $228 to $230 in the South and $376-plus in the North. Packer inquiry will continue to improve as the day progresses. We are hearing a couple of packing plants will be dark or running with limited production today and/or Friday. The Grand Island, Nebraska, JBS plant will limit production due to flooding, heavy rainfall and lagoon issues; production is expected to drop to between 1,000 to 1,500 head, down from the usual 5,200 head. Tyson's facility in Amarillo, Texas, will be dark today and Friday due to labor issues, as workers vote on whether to strike or not. There is said to be picketing around the plant, with labor demands mostly centering around wages and more time off. Feeder cattle futures were mixed with light but stable buyer support moving into nearby contracts throughout Thursday. Limited activity is expected to be seen through the rest of the week with traders looking for additional longer term direction from both cash cattle trade at the end of the week and outside market direction. Lean hog futures posted light to moderate losses during trade Thursday. Traders continue to look ahead to the afternoon release of the June 1 Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report, but early expectations see significant fireworks from the report. Many feel overall hog numbers and breeding intentions will be fractionally changed from year ago levels. Given that these reports are quarterly in nature, most of the expected impact is likely already factored into the market over the past several weeks. The policy was issued by the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office in April and imposes phased-in fees on foreign vessels connected to Chinese ownership or construction. In the first year of implementation, the policy is expected to increase total shipping costs by an estimated $2.3 billion. 

By 2028, when the full fee schedule is phased in, shipping costs are projected to reach $6.2 billion. Corn, soybean, and wheat shipments will be the most affected, with estimated costs rising by five to seven cents a bushel, depending on the crop and route. The final policy incorporates several modifications from the original February 2025 proposal, including an extended implementation timeline, lower per-ton fee rates, and vessel-type exemptions, which significantly reduced expected impacts.

Study on new port fee policy raises ag export costs

A USDA report says May egg output dropped year over year, as did the number of total egg layers in the U.S. Production fell to 8.59 billion eggs last month, down six percent year over year. 

About 7.3 billion were table eggs, and 1.29 billion were hatching eggs. Of the hatching eggs, 1.18 billion were broiler-type. USDA also said the number of egg layers in the U.S. on June 1 totaled 350 million, a six percent drop from the same date last year. 

Approximately 285 million layers produced table or market eggs, 60.3 million laid broiler-type hatching eggs, and 4.13 million produced egg-type hatching eggs. The rate of production averaged 79 eggs per 100 layers, a slight decrease from June 2024.

May egg production drops six percent

The Senate parliamentarian who acts as a legislative umpire has ruled against a key funding provision in the president’s One Big Beautiful tax and spending bill. 

Elizabeth MacDonough says the SNAP provision to force the states to pick up a sliding amount of food stamp benefits based on payment error rates violates a key Senate rule.

The Byrd rule, named after the late West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, prohibited legislating on budget reconciliation bills. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley.

“I think there are still going to be attempts to look at alternative ways to craft some form of alternative cost-share that complies with the Byrd rule. So, this might not be over yet. Hopefully it’s not.” 

But if the ruling stands, it would be a big win for Democrats, who’ve targeted SNAP savings in their long-running farm bill feud with Republicans, and would punch a huge funding hole in the GOP tax bill. Grassley has some longstanding, though so far, unsuccessful ideas on new savings.

“Get rid of the proposal to increase payment limits from 125 thousand to 155 thousand. We can also increase savings by closing the ‘actively engaged’ loophole that allows Wall Street bankers to cash government checks meant for farmers with dirt under their fingernails.”  

But without a quick solution or a Senate override of the parliamentarian, action could be slowed.

“The Leader says we’re going to stay in session until we get it done, even if that takes us into Sunday.” 

President Trump has set a goal of having the bill on his desk by July 4th though both chambers were set to be out for the holiday by the end of this week.

The decision rejected an attempt by oil industry interests to undermine the Renewable Fuel Standard, a program requiring refiners to include a certain amount of biofuels in the nation’s fuel blend. 

“The oil industry’s arguments in this case were fatally flawed and relied on tenuous legal arguments that ran contrary to the facts and plain language of the RFS statute,” said Growth Energy in a statement. 

Oil and environmental groups challenged EPA’s RFS Set Rule, which established Renewable Volume Obligations for 2023-2025, on various grounds. In its ruling late last week, the country rejected most of their claims, finding that the challenges were without merit. 

The decision also remands the rule back to the EPA and the Fish and Wildlife Service to better explain its conclusions while allowing the set rule to remain.

Appeals court upholds RFS Set challenge

United States and China tensions and the resulting tariffs cost U.S. farmers $2 billion in lost exports this year. 

A new study from North Dakota State University’s Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies says the lost sales to China far surpass modest gains elsewhere. From January to April, agricultural exports to China contracted by over $5 billion, leaving export volumes up to 55 percent lower than the previous year. 

U.S. ag exports to South Asia, the European Union, and Central America climbed by 43, 39, and 24 percent, respectively. However, U.S. gains didn’t get high enough to offset the losses in the Chinese market. Both countries reduced tariffs as part of a deal negotiated in Switzerland. However, the U.S. preserved a baseline ten percent tariff on Chinese products and a 20 percent tariff applied over China’s role in the fentanyl crisis. 

Beijing has a ten percent tariff in place.

July futures posted a third straight session lower and the fourth down day out of the past five. A bearish cloud remains over the corn market. Not even the lower conditions report from USDA on Monday or a sizeable flash sale of corn to Mexico Tuesday morning could deter sellers. The market is preparing for increased corn acreage in next Monday's USDA report and traders seem to be expressing skepticism in the 1.365-billion-bushel (bb) carryout stocks number USDA is currently estimating as well.

Monday's Crop Progress report was a bit of surprise with national good-to-excellent ratings for the corn crop coming in 2 percentage points less than a week ago. Even with the drop, the good-to-excellent rating of 70% certainly doesn't paint a very concerning picture for the yield potential of the crop. It is worth reminding that June condition scores have a weak relationship in general with final corn yields; there is a lot of weather left to go at this point. Which is why the extension of friendly weather through June and into early July is the primary bearish factor keeping corn prices in a downtrend. The longer the forecast remains friendly, the less perceived risk to the growing crop in the eyes of traders.

In other news for Tuesday, private exporters announced a very strong round of corn sales to Mexico amounting to 24.8 million bushels (mb). Of the total, 21.8 mb are for 2025-26 and the balance for 2026-27. This will certainly extend the commitments lead over a year ago. Seasonally speaking, mid-June is typically where we start to see a pick-up in new-crop corn sales, which may be the boost of demand needed to slow the selling pressure in corn futures. For Tuesday, however, futures traders gave little mind to the flash sale.

In corn technicals, December corn futures are in clear striking distance of the current contract low of $4.28, which is a likely target for the trade this week. If that level is broken, the next round of support is likely in the low $4.20s. For a bullish objective, I'd like to see a recovery to back above former support at $4.35, which would put a challenge of downtrend resistance in the $4.40 to $4.45 area back into play.

The DTN National Corn Index finished Monday at $3.98. Tuesday's futures close and implied corn basis of 21 cents under the July board would indicate the index on Tuesday afternoon to be near $3.95.

July soybeans dropped another 12 cents Tuesday to $10.46 3/4. November soybeans were down 9 3/4 cents to $10.37. It was another day of profit-taking across the soybean complex, primarily spurred on by the drastic reversal in crude oil prices which spilled over into soybean oil futures as well. Soybean oil futures closed at 52.17, trading lower for the fifth straight session and chipping away slightly at the gap left in the chart following the June 13 EPA announcement. If profit-takers decide to fill the gap, 50.61 is the target.

Monday's Crop Progress report saw soybean conditions hold steady at 66% good to excellent, just a point lower than at this point in 2024. Soybean plantings were reported at 96% complete as of June 22, just a point behind 2024 as well. Currently there are no glaring delays with the majority of soybean planting regions now within the late planting window for crop insurance purposes. It is worth noting that lagging states such as Kansas and Kentucky have portions of the state that allow soybean planting up until June 30 so there is still incentive there for producers to plant to the buzzer.

In soybean technicals, November futures traded back below the 20-day moving average near $10.40 Tuesday, while the 50-day moving average near $10.36 3/4 held for now. The 50-day moving average has been relatively supportive to new-crop soybean futures since mid-April.

The DTN National Soybean Index finished Monday at $9.99. Tuesday's futures close and implied soybean basis of 60 cents under the July board would indicate the index on Tuesday afternoon to be near $9.87.

Wheat futures traded sharply lower again Tuesday with July Kansas City futures down 15 1/4 cents to $5.34 3/4. July Chicago and MIAX Minneapolis wheat futures were also lower, with Minneapolis showing the most resilience to the pressure, closing down only 1 3/4 cents.

Winter wheat harvest across the U.S. advanced 9 points through the most recent week to 19% complete on average. This remains behind the previous 5-year average pace of 28% heading into the final week of June. Meanwhile, conditions also declined nationally, with good-to-excellent ratings declining by 3 percentage points to 49%. Leading weekly declines came from Montana, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Oklahoma and Colorado's drops may be a bit misleading, especially for Colorado where conditions were 66% good to excellent prior to this week and even with the drop still sit in better shape than at this point in 2024. Top-producing Kansas lost 4 points from good-to-excellent ratings, perhaps reflective of heavy precipitation and wind damage early last week. It is also possible high heat through the weekend played a role. The heat looks to break over the next week's forecast, and there are chances for rains across the Southern Plains, which at this point may work to slow harvest further in some areas.

For Tuesday, wheat traders pretty much ignored Monday's Crop Progress report, perhaps seeing enough opportunity for dry windows in the forecast for harvest pace to catch up, and not seeing the drop in winter wheat ratings as a serious issue at this point. On the world scale, generally good conditions for the crop in France as well as improved estimates in recent weeks and months for the Russian wheat crop continue to add to pressure on wheat futures.

The DTN National HRW Index finished Monday at $4.93, while the DTN National HRS Index was $5.98. Tuesday's futures close and the implied basis of 57 cents under the July for HRW, and 16 cents under the July for HRS, would indicate the indices for Tuesday afternoon to be near $4.78 and $5.96, respectively.

USA Today says that comes only days after the administration reinstated workplace raids at U.S. agricultural operations. “We can’t put farms out of business,” Trump said on June 20. “We’re looking at doing something where good and reputable farmers can take responsibility for the people they hire and let them have the responsibility. At the same time, we don’t want to hurt people who are not criminals.” 

The messages have been mixed as raids continue despite the President promising changes to protect migrants in the farming, hotel, and leisure industries in a social media post on Truth Social on June 12. After directing immigration officials to largely pause the raids on farms, hotels, restaurants, and meatpacking plants, the administration reversed course only a few days later and resumed the raids.

Administration Still Considering Immigration Relief for U.S. Agriculture

The USDA’s Cattle on Feed Report said cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.4 million on June 1, 2025. 

That inventory level was one percent below June 1, 2024, which fell within most of the industry’s pre-report expectations. Industry experts called the report neutral to slightly friendly but continue to point to a tight supply picture for the cattle market. Drovers says several states continue to see inventory well below last year, such as Texas at 93 percent and Colorado at 96 percent of 2024.

The USDA’s Cattle on Feed Report said cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.4 million on June 1, 2025. That inventory level was one percent below June 1, 2024, which fell within most of the industry’s pre-report expectations. Industry experts called the report neutral to slightly friendly but continue to point to a tight supply picture for the cattle market. Drovers says several states continue to see inventory well below last year, such as Texas at 93 percent and Colorado at 96 percent of 2024. Ending stocks-to-use percentage is far from a perfect predictor of corn price, but a $4.20 futures price and new contract lows with a stocks-to-use of less than 9% is certainly a bearish surprise for the season, and a telling indication that grain fundamentals just aren't currently at the top of trader concerns. That or traders are still expecting a bearish increase in stocks by the end of the marketing year, in which case the June 30 report has a history of such surprises, both bullish and bearish.

Moving forward, Monday afternoon's delayed Commitments of Traders report from the CFTC will shed some light on speculator positions as of June 17, but it will be a safe assumption that whatever figure is printed Monday afternoon is likely less than the true net-short position amongst noncommercial traders. Also released post-close on Monday will be the latest Crop Progress report from USDA, the U.S. corn crop was rated at 72% good to excellent last week, which is expected to hold steady or even improve this afternoon.

In corn technicals, December corn futures traded again to 2025 lows, and dropped just below recent support near $4.35 following Friday's rejection at downtrend resistance. The DTN National Corn Index finished Friday at $4.07. Monday's futures close and implied corn basis of 22 cents under the July board would indicate the index on Monday afternoon to be near $3.97.

July soybeans dropped 9 1/4 cents Monday to $10.58 3/4. November soybeans were down 14 cents to $10.46 3/4. Soybean futures dropped for a second straight session following Friday's reversal and have now given back approximately half of the gains made from the bullish EPA biofuel mandate announcement on June 13. Soybean oil futures have also posted a fourth straight session lower since the initial 2-day rally following the EPA news, as traders have quickly turned to booking profits amid lingering uncertainty especially with the Trump administration's "Big, Beautiful Bill" still working its way through the Senate and the July 4 target date for passage growing nearer.

Soybean conditions dropped in last week's Crop Progress report by 2 percentage points to 66% good to excellent. Traders will be interested to see how crops fared in the eyes of the USDA following a week of mostly favorable weather, with the exception of some severe storm events across the Plains. It will also be important with the June 30 acreage revisions looming to see how the planting season concludes, with 93% of the crop planted as of last week.

In soybean technicals, November futures will be searching for support between current prices and the consolidation of the 50-day and 100-day moving averages in the mid $10.30s, which stands as the immediate bearish target. The 20-day moving average near $10.40 1/2 currently is the first line of major support.

The DTN National Soybean Index finished Friday at $10.11. Monday's futures close and implied soybean basis of 57 cents under the July board would indicate the index on Monday afternoon to be near $10.02.

July Kansas City wheat futures traded down 13 1/4 cents Monday to $5.50. Chicago and MIAX Minneapolis futures were also sharply lower as traders return to risk-off trade following a burst of short-covering over the past few weeks which really accelerated last week. Last week's weather events, with notable storms first in southern Kansas and then in North Dakota later in the week, are currently not leading traders to believe any significant yield loss has occurred. In fact, July KC futures traders have removed most of the premium built through Wednesday's 23-cent surge. Prices still remain elevated from mid-May lows, however for now it seems traders are satisfied with the yield risk priced into the market ahead of Monday's update from USDA.

Along those lines, traders will be interested to see if high heat through late last week and into the weekend helped to dry out overly wet areas and allow for producers to catch up following the slow start to harvest noted in last week's Crop Progress update. Price action Monday would indicate traders are expecting significant progress to have been made over the past week. Also, later Monday, it will be very interesting to see just how much of the once-record net-short position wheat traders have covered through the rally as of last Tuesday, June 17.

For wheat technicals on Monday, the $5.50 mark has provided soft support for the price break thus far, beyond that the 50-day moving average near $5.40 is a bearish target for July Kansas City futures. To the upside, if bulls can recover above the 20-day moving average near $5.51 1/2 quickly following Monday's close, that would certainly be an optimistic signal for the nearby trade.

The DTN National HRW Index finished Friday at $5.06, while the DTN National HRS Index was $6.11. Monday's futures close and the implied basis of 57 cents under the July for HRW, and 16 cents under the July for HRS, would indicate the indices for Monday afternoon to be near $4.93 and $5.99, respectively.

Public listening sessions on the future of the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule have wrapped up, and the Trump administration said it plans to have the rule completed by the end of the year. 

Throughout the sessions, there was a clear divide between what agriculture and industry groups and environmental groups are seeking in WOTUS, as ag reps said they wanted clearer definitions while environmental groups asked for no changes to the rule. 

DTN reports the continued back and forth of definitions and re-definitions from administration to administration in the past 20 years has led to what is currently a patchwork of differing versions of the WOTUS definition from state to state because of a series of legal cases. 

The agencies held nine listening sessions including two public sessions in West Virginia and Utah, and said in the news release that they "heard from people who are frustrated with the constantly shifting" WOTUS definition.
