SHAWNE COUNTY—A family pet died in a house fire on Wednesday in Topeka.
Just after 4:30p.m., crews responded to a two-story house fire at 420 SW Woodlawn Avenue in Topeka, according to a media release.
Fire crews encountered heavy smoke coming from the first floor of the residence and initiated an interior fire attack and successfully extinguished the fire.
Fire crews conducted a systematic search of the structure and safely removed two dogs and one cat. Life-saving efforts, including CPR, were administered to one of the dogs, but despite those efforts, the dog did not survive. No occupants were home at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature: Smoke detectors were found in the home.
