Two-thirds of Maryville short-term rentals failing to pay guest tax

Maryville City Manager Ryan Heiland addressed the issue of short-term rentals not paying the additional 5% transient guest tax at a recent City Council meeting.

Out of the 60 short-term rentals in Maryville, only 21 are legally registered and paying the tax. Heiland highlighted the challenges in ensuring compliance with the tax, as some rental owners were unaware of the requirement.

The city is working to educate and collect the tax from all short-term rentals, with some owners already coming forward to pay back taxes. Airbnb has agreed to distribute the city's ordinance to all listed short-term rentals in Maryville to improve compliance.
