3 fatal accidents in Kansas on Wednesday had one thing in common

TOPEKA —Three fatal accidents that occurred Wednesday in Kansas had one thing in common. The drivers were not wearing seat belts.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Silverado driven by  Gregory Scott  Campbell, 32, Emporia, was westbound on U.S. 56 just east of Kansas 256 one and one half miles west of Marion just before 6.a.m. on Thursday.

The pickup crossed the center line and struck a 2015 Freightliner semi driven by Brian A McGrew, 51, Longford, head-on.  After impact the semi overturned and blocked U.S. 56.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Jost Funeral Home.  McGrew was not transported to treatment. Campbell was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Just after 9a.m.,  a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by Kellie J. Harvey, 57, Mapleton, was northbound on 125th Street one half mile north of Ridge Road approximately five miles north of U.S. 54 in Bourbon County. The SUV traveled off the road to the right, returned to the road, traveled back off the road again and the driver overcorrected.  The SUV returned to the road and rolled into the south ditch.

Harvey was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Cheney Witt Funeral Chapel. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Just after 9p.m., a 2003 Chevy Silverado driven by Kelly L.  Shaffer, 58, Yates Center, was eastbound on U.S. 54 four miles west of Yates Center. The driver  lost control of the pickup. The vehicle traveled off the roadway to the right and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle crossed back across the roadway, traveled off the road to the left again, struck the ditch and overturned.

Shaffer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Jones-Campbell Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
