Ghosts and ghouls, witches and wizards, will all be hitting the streets tomorrow to get their candy as kids go door to door trick or treating for Halloween.
And as families get out this Halloween, local safety officialls are giving safety tips to keep in mind. St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster says for those out and about trick or treating, one of his biggest tips, as people are out getting candy in the dark, is to make sure you are bright at night.
"Remind parents to think about that with costumes, if the costume is just dark you can very reasonably pick up some reflective tape to add to a part of the costume, or give your kids some flashlights, or a very cheap alternative is those little glowsticks you can buy," Luster says on the KFEQmunnity show. "Just so the drivers can see what's out there."
Luster also reminds trick or treaters that there is strength in numbers and that it's important to make sure you are traveling in big groups as you go house to house. And for drivers, Luster says it's important to stay extra alert no matter where you are.
"Whether it's on Ashland (Avenue) or any of our neighborhoods in St. Joseph on Halloween, I try to emphasis be patient, slow down, take a little bit of extra time, and keep those distractions down in your car," Luster explains. "Because there is just a lot of pedestrian traffic out that night and we don't want anyone's night to be spoiled by an accident."
Along with those safety efforts the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is doing their annual sex offender compliance checks.
