COWLEY COUNTY —The animal shelter in rural Cowley County is working to recover from weekend flooding.

On their social media page the Cowley County Humane Society wrote, "a lot of people are asking why the shelter keeps flooding? The shelter has always flooded. It’s just recently gotten worse over the last few years.

The Kansas dept of Transportation is aware of this problem and the highway will be redone with a new drive and way into the shelter.

Once the project is completed the flooding should subside as they will be fixing a new drainage ditch and system so water will run off properly and into where it should and not continue to flood the shelter.

We do not have a definitive date when it will start so in the meantime, we make the best of the situation handed to us.Last but not least thank you to the shelters that reached out, the groomers in the area, dog trainers & facilities and residents who offered places that were fenced in if we needed to place dogs. Your generosity is noted and I am humbled by the amount of people who have reached out and offered what they can."

A lot of beds had to be thrown out because they were saturated with dirty water. Some of our small dogs and puppies used those beds that had to be thrown out.

All the dogs that needed rescue have been rescued right now. We will let you know if we need any additional help. Thank you all for showing up and helping us.
