A portion of Interstate 29 in Holt County remains blocked due to a crash involving a vehicle transporting hazardous materials the Missouri Highway Patrol reports.
Troopers with the Patrol told reporters from the St. Joseph News Press who were on site, as posted on Facebook, that the hazardous spill was due to a truck transporting sulfuric acid suspended with nitroglycerin which overturned. The closure time for the roadway is undetermined, and Holt County Sheriff Tiger Parsons says on social media the closure could last multiple days.
Hazmat crews are working with the Department of Natural Resources to address the spill. The detour, rerouting traffic to US Route 59, will remain in place for an undetermined amount of time during the closure. Northbound traffic on I-29 will exit at the 75 mile marker south of Mound City and travel to Mound City where they will be able to enter back onto I-29. An alternate route is US 71 at the 56 mile marker.
Southbound traffic along I-29 will exit at Mound City onto MO 118 and travel west to MO 111 before traveling south to US 159 and going east and entering back onto I-29 at mile marker 79.
