USDA Reminds Farmers of August Deadlines for Key Assistance Programs
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is urging farmers and ranchers to act soon as several important deadlines approach for federal programs aimed at helping producers manage rising production costs, recover from natural disasters, and strengthen long-term financial protection.
According to the USDA's Farm Service Agency, applications for the Assistance for Specialty Crop Farmers Program must be submitted by Aug. 7. The program provides financial assistance to eligible specialty crop producers facing increased production expenses and other challenges.
Another key deadline is Aug. 12 for the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program, which offers assistance to producers who experienced qualifying losses from natural disasters.
In addition, eligible landowners have until Aug. 31 to review and request potential base acre increases for the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs. The USDA says this marks the first opportunity since 2002 for producers to update their base acres, making it a significant decision for many farming operations.
Farm Service Agency Administrator Bill Beam encouraged producers not to delay.
"Don't wait until the last minute," Beam said. "These deadlines represent real opportunities for producers to recover from market and weather challenges."
USDA officials recommend that farmers and ranchers contact their local Farm Service Agency office as soon as possible to review eligibility requirements, complete applications, and ensure they do not miss available assistance.
