
EL DORADO, KAN. – El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) resident Joshua Matthews, 38, died on Friday, according to a statement from the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Matthews was found unresponsive in his cell Friday night. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived but were unsuccessful. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
Matthews was serving a compiled 245-month sentence for three counts of convictions of the battery of corrections employees in Douglas County. He had other convictions for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, flee or attempt to elude law enforcement and for drugs, according to the KDOC. He also had over 110 disciplinary reports while in the Kansas Corrections system.
Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
The El Dorado Correctional Facility is the state’s second-largest facility. It serves only adult males and has a capacity of 1,900 residents.
