The Kansas City Royals will get the opportunity to play near the site of one of Hollywood's most popular sports movies in 2027, playing in the fourth edition of the Field of Dreams game against the Boston Red Sox.
Major League Baseball and Universal Pictures announced on Friday that MLB will return to Iowa's most famous cornfield for the fourth edition of the Field of Dreams Game on Thursday, August 12th, 2027 with the Royals hosting the Red Sox. The tradition of celebrating the Field of Dreams began in 2021, with the White Sox and Yankees, followed by the Reds and Cubs in 2022, taking a few years off, before Thursday night when the Twins and Phillies played this season.
The historic games represents the only American or National League regular-season games ever played in the state of Iowa.
“We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball’s most cherished events and help to grow the game to a worldwide audience,” Royals President of Business Operations Cullen Maxey says in a news release from the team. “Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting.”
The Royals will open their series with the Red Sox during Thursday’s game in Iowa, then after an off day on Friday, the Royals and Red Sox will travel to Kansas City to finish their three-game series with the final two games at Kauffman Stadium starting Saturday August, 14th, 2027. According to Royals Vice President of Communications Curt Nelson, this contest marks the third neutral-site game in Royals franchise history:
- Sept. 26, 1969: Royals vs. Chicago White Sox at Milwaukee County Stadium
- June 13, 2019: Royals vs. Detroit Tigers at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska (College World Series prelude)
- Aug. 12, 2027: Royals vs. Boston Red Sox at Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa
