Amid several recent fires, the St. Joseph Fire Department has issued a series of safety reminders aimed at preventing home heating fires.

Fire officials noted that while heating is a primary concern during the winter months, cooking incidents remain the leading cause of residential fires. To mitigate these risks, the department recommends that residents always turn off kitchen appliances when leaving the room and keep any combustible items—such as towels, oven mitts, or packaging—well away from active heat sources.

Space heaters and electrical maintenance are also high on the department's priority list. Residents should turn off portable heaters whenever they leave a room or go to sleep. Additionally, the department advises checking all electrical equipment for damaged or frayed cords, which should be replaced immediately to prevent electrical shorts and potential blazes.

The department also emphasized the life-saving importance of early detection. Officials urge every household to ensure that both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and in proper working order, testing them regularly to ensure they can provide an adequate warning in the event of an emergency.

Young at Heart Resources, the area agency for aging in northwest Missouri, is launching a program to help make retirement fun, introducing retirees to volunteer opportunities in the region.&nbsp;

The Give 5 Program helps to connect retirees with volunteer opportunities, allowing people to be able to socialize, contribute, and learn new skills as well as be able to share their own lifetime of experiences and meet new people while making a difference in their communities or throughout the region.&nbsp;

Volunteers are currently being recruited in Buchanan, Andrew, Atchison, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth counties for a series of classes that will take place at the Joyce Raye Patterson 50+ Activity Center in St. Joseph.&nbsp; The center is located at 100 S 10th Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Four classes will be held throughout March, the first on March 3rd and the final class on March 12th, running from 10am to 2pm each day.&nbsp; A free meal will be provided with each class.&nbsp; At the end of the classes, participants will be able to choose where they would like to volunteer at the end of the two week program.&nbsp; After completing the program, volunteers will give at least five hours or more as a volunteer to officially complete the program.&nbsp;

The foundation has a proven track record of easing the financial burden of higher education. During the previous 2025–2026 academic year, the NCMC Foundation awarded more than $360,000 to over 365 students. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors who are dedicated to making college more accessible for everyone.

The online application is designed for simplicity. By completing just one general application, incoming, returning, and transfer students are automatically matched with every scholarship for which they qualify. Selection criteria vary across different awards but generally include:

NCMC Foundation opens 2026–2027 scholarship applications

A Dekalb County woman recently claimed a $100,000 top prize from a Missouri Lottery scratch-off ticket after a stroke of luck led her to double-check her results. 

The winning ticket was sold at SBJ Fuels, located at 1202 N. Walnut St. in Cameron.

The windfall was nearly missed, as the player did not initially notice a matching number while scratching the ticket. It was only after she used the Missouri Lottery app to scan the ticket that she realized she had actually won the game’s top prize.

The winner traveled to the Missouri Lottery regional office in Kansas City to officially claim her winnings on Jan. 20.

Cameron gas station sells $100,000 winning Missouri Lottery ticket

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce opened the doors to show off a new space in downtown to help entrepreneurs get their business ideas off the ground.  

The Launch Pad opened officially at the beginning of this year, after a soft launch in December, giving business owners a co-working space in northwest Missouri.  

Chamber of Commerce President Natalie Hawn says there's already been successes, with the building nearly full, including with an exciting tech start up 

"That was really just officing out of what space he could find, if it was Parkway or a coffee shop or Smooth Endings, and we were able to really get him an office space,” Hawn tells reporters.  “And he’s already gone from one office space to three, plus additional cubicles, he's added three employees since he started here and he relocated one of those employees from Los Angeles.” 

Hawn says that type of synergy is exactly what is being looked for in the space downtown.  It also offers several resources to entrepreneurs to get their businesses started.  

Hawn says the space is available to all of northwest Missouri, and provides whatever business owners might be looking for 

"We’re having classes come up on how to prepare for World Cup, we just had a class on how to learn AI, how to code, how to make an app in a day,” Hawn explains.  “So, I think no matter where you are on that journey, we’ll have a resource for you.” 

Hawn says the space is also going to be adding several other resources for people, such as a podcast studio, to continue adding opportunities for people to be able to utilize the Launch Pad.  

Jamie Donaldson, co-owner of Juniper Lane in St. Joseph, says having the resources to know how to start a business in one space is convenient for entrepreneurs. 

"Instead of having to do all the Googling and being like well how am I supposed to start a business, you have one spot to go, you know you’re getting answers from somebody who understands running a business, operating a business, and can send you in the right direction without feeling like you’re having to do all that leg work yourself and then wondering if you found the right answers to begin with,” Donaldson says. 

Donaldson also points to the collaboration at the space being huge for business owners, with the space giving entrepreneurs the space to work together closely and become more of a unit.

Launch Pad officially opens to help business owners get off the ground and running

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that the Tarkio River Bridge on Holt County Route 111, located west of Craig, will be closed beginning Monday, Feb. 2. 

Bridge crews will be conducting core drilling at the site to gather essential data for an upcoming reconstruction project.

The closure will follow a specific schedule over several days. On Monday, Feb. 2, the bridge will be closed from noon to 5 p.m. Following the initial start, the bridge will remain closed daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, through Thursday, Feb. 5.

Motorists who normally travel this route will need to plan ahead and find an alternate path, as the bridge will be impassable during these working hours. 

This preliminary work is being done in advance of a full bridge replacement, which is currently slated for the 2027 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

This significant reduction in drivers allowed road crews to respond more quickly and safely, leading to a substantial decrease in serious incidents across the state.

MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger expressed his gratitude, stating that the public’s decision to stay home was the single most important factor in the progress made so far. He noted that crews have been working continuously in extreme cold, and while progress is being made, he urged Missourians to continue planning ahead and delaying travel whenever possible.

The storm brought measurable snow to the entire state followed by dangerously cold temperatures. Because of the extreme cold, MoDOT warns that snow and ice will likely remain on surfaces throughout the week, particularly on less-traveled secondary routes.

As of Monday morning, MoDOT crews had already logged more than 1 million miles in clearing efforts across the state. Despite the severity of the weather, Missouri recorded only one weather-related traffic fatality—a figure well below the average for a storm of this size and even lower than a typical weekend in the state.

MoDOT will remain active around the clock over the next few days. While major highways are expected to remain mostly clear, secondary roads may still be covered. Drivers who must head out are encouraged to check road conditions at traveler.modot.org and carry essential emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and phone chargers.

Finally, officials remind motorists to drive slowly and give snowplows and emergency vehicles plenty of room. If a vehicle slides off the road, the safest course of action is to remain inside the car with the seat belt fastened until help arrives. For further assistance, the public can call 888-ASK-MODOT.

MoDOT credits record low traffic for safe storm recovery

 A 33-year old Savannah man was sentenced to prison Monday for child sex trafficking involving two minors.

Ross Rutherford received the sentence in Andrew County Court after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree child trafficking.

According to court documents, a judge sentenced Rutherford to 30 years in the Department of Corrections for the first count and 10 years for the second.

In a plea statement, Rutherford admitted to exchanging money for "suggestive pictures" from a victim under the age of 18 in May 2024. He also acknowledged requesting nude photos from a second minor in January 2025.

As the season kicks off, officials are providing resources to help taxpayers navigate the process efficiently and avoid common pitfalls associated with traditional filing methods.

Missouri Director of Revenue Trish Vincent strongly recommends electronic filing to ensure the fastest processing times. She issued a specific warning for those planning to mail their returns: relying on a post office drop box for a same-day postmark is no longer a guarantee. Due to recent changes in the postal system, mail deposited in a slot may not be processed until the following day. To avoid issues with time-sensitive documents, taxpayers should review current U.S. Postal Service rules regarding postmarking.

Chief Tax Officer with Jackson Hewitt Tax Services, Mark Steber, says filing taxes can be daunting, but a simple way to get organized is to collect all your documents in one place. "It doesn't have to be elaborate. A large envelope or a shoe box works. That's a simple way to get started to having a complete and accurate tax return."

Beyond avoiding mailing delays, e-filing is recognized as a more accurate and secure method for submitting tax data. The DOR encourages citizens to combine electronic filing with the direct deposit option to further accelerate the refund process. Generally, those who file electronically receive their money significantly faster than those who submit paper forms.

Many Missourians may be eligible to file both their federal and state returns at no cost. Through the Free File Alliance, eligible taxpayers can access approved software to complete their taxes for free. Detailed information on these programs can be found on the IRS Free File website or the DOR’s Online Filing resource page.

Steber says about 100-million people are expected to receive a tax refund.

The deadline to file 2025 individual income tax return is April 15, 2026.

Missouri tax filing season opens

Area residents who would like to take the plunge into icy cold water in order to benefit Special Olympics Missouri have the opportunity to do so in February.

There are several Polar Plunge events throughout the region, including Kansas City, Chillicothe, Kirksville and Maryville.

Each year, the Buchannan County Sheriff's Department travels to Maryville to take part in the fundraiser. Sheriff Bill Puett says, "Right now we have put together a four-person to go up and take the Polar Plunge."

Special Olympics Missouri supports about 12,000 Special Olympic athletes throughout The Show Me state. 

Puett says the sheriff's department looks forward to helping out. "Anything we can do to help Special Olympics is extremely important. We try to help where we can and if anyone would like to donate and help Special Olympic athletes, its greatly appreciated."

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes to the event. Kansas City will host the plunge Jan. 31, while the Chillicothe Polar Plunge takes place Feb. 7. There is another event in Kirksville on Feb. 28.

 </figure>(By RYAN SKAITH)Area residents who would like to take the plunge into icy cold water in order to benefit Special Olympics Missouri have the opportunity to do so in February.There are several Polar Plunge events throughout the region, including Kansas City, Chillicothe, Kirksville and Maryville.Each year, the Buchannan County Sheriff's Department travels to Maryville to take part in the fundraiser. Sheriff Bill Puett says, "Right now we have put together a four-person to go up and take the Polar Plunge."Special Olympics Missouri supports about 12,000 Special Olympic athletes throughout The Show Me state. Puett says the sheriff's department looks forward to helping out. "Anything we can do to help Special Olympics is extremely important. We try to help where we can and if anyone would like to donate and help Special Olympic athletes, its greatly appreciated."The Maryville Polar Plunge takes place Feb. 21 at Mozingo Lake. Kansas City will host the plunge Jan. 31, while the Chillicothe Polar Plunge takes place Feb. 7. Starting January 15, the platform began accepting applications from graduating high school seniors and current college students seeking financial aid for the upcoming academic year.

These scholarship opportunities are versatile, supporting students planning to attend two-year or four-year colleges and universities, as well as those enrolling in vocational and technical schools. Currently, the Community Foundation administers 92 distinct scholarship funds specifically designated for students across 18 counties in Northwest Missouri and beyond.

To begin the application process, interested students should visit cfnwmo.org and click on the Scholar-Link logo. It was noted that students are urged to complete all requirements early, as the final deadline for submission is March 2, 2026.

A 20-year-old man from Cameron, MO, was arrested for making a bomb threat at the Cameron Walmart on Friday night. 

Police responded to the incident and detained the man after a struggle. A search of the man, identified as Tucker James Craft, revealed drug paraphernalia and stolen electronic devices from the store. 

Craft had allegedly made the bomb threat after being denied service for presenting an expired driver's license. He faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges for the incident including 2nd degree terrorist threat, resisting arrest, stealing, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance, according to online jail records.

Planned roadwork for Northwest Missouri, Jan. 26 - Feb. 1

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha and Kansas City districts have released a draft feasibility report and environmental study aimed at revolutionizing flood risk management along the Lower Missouri River.

The System Plan, detailed in a newly published Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), outlines a comprehensive strategy to bolster resiliency across the entire basin. Beyond flood protection, the plan identifies projects designed to deliver ecological, recreational, and economic benefits to local communities.

Officials are now inviting federal and state agencies, Tribal nations, local governments, and the general public to review the documents and submit formal comments. The public comment period is open through March 9, 2026.

“The System Plan is a roadmap for the future of the Lower Missouri River,” the districts stated in a joint release. “We are looking for input to ensure these actions effectively address flood risks while supporting the social and environmental health of the region.”

The draft files and an electronic comment form are available on the project’s official website. Written comments can also be submitted via mail or email to the Planning Branches in Kansas City or Omaha:

USACE has scheduled a series of in-person public meetings and webinars for late February 2026. Specific dates, times, and locations will be posted on the project website, though officials noted that schedules may shift due to inclement weather.

Following the review period, the Corps expects to address all feedback and issue a Final PEIS in the spring of 2026.

USACE Seeks Public Input on Lower Missouri River Flood Resiliency Plan

Extremely frigid temperatures are ravaging the area and it's important to keep not only your safety in mind, but also your pets.  

Wind chills are expected to make temperatures feel as low as –22 today and possible snow is expected this weekend as well. 

Melanie Barnes with Friends of the Animal Shelter says pets should never be outside in these temperatures, but if they have to be make sure to have adequate housing for them 

"If you have an outside dog house or a cat shelter, it needs to be up off the ground, or there needs to be a lot of insulation like foam piece in between, not like an egg shell foam I’m talking about like an actual white foam cooler that kind of thing, but it really should be up off the ground,” Barnes says on the KFEQmunnity show.  “People don’t realize the ground when it is frozen, when temps are going to get like they are for us, that ground will absorb heat in a matter of a short period of time.” 

Barnes says to also ensure your pet has a fresh source of water, because it will freeze, and that it also has the right amount of food to keep it safe and healthy.  

Barnes with Friends of the Animal Shelter says if you have to let your pet out in the cold, be sure to watch for signs they need to come inside 

"They may be having fun, but if they start to shiver and, or whine, even though they may still be looking like they enjoy it, they’re getting cold,” Barnes explains.  “They’re showing you the signs that they are getting cold, so that may be the time to bring them in.” 

Barnes says if you get beyond the shivering and your pet starts to slow down or curl up things are getting beyond safe for the animal.  

While keeping your pets in mind in the extreme cold, it’s also important to consider those pets and animals that live outside 

Barnes says if you have cats that live outside in your area, be sure to check your car before getting on the road 

"Go ahead and do a couple bangs on the hood, or just some light taps, make some noise they say clap your hands, I’m not saying you have to get real aggressive with your car don’t hurt yourself, clap your hands do some other things just to make sure  we don’t have, not only cats, but maybe just anything else that likes to climb up underneath there,” Barnes says. 

Barnes says it's also important, much like the hotter months, to not keep your pets inside a car as the temperatures get this cold to avoid hypothermia.

As extreme cold temps strike area keep your pets protected

A stretch of Interstate 29 in Buchanan County will close in both directions next month for the demolition of the Gene Field Road bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, with the interstate expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9. Clarkson Construction Company is the contractor for the project.

During the closure, MoDOT will implement the following detours:

Gene Field Road will remain closed between Woodbine Road and Woodland Drive for the duration of the bridge replacement. The project, which is scheduled for completion in July 2026, will widen the bridge, replace the driving surface, and add sidewalks to both the north and south sides.

MoDOT officials noted that additional overnight lane closures on I-29 may occur between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. throughout the construction period. A 10.6-foot width restriction will also be in effect.

All work is weather-permitting and schedules are subject to change.

I-29 in Buchanan County to close Feb. 7 for Gene Field Road Bridge demolition

Bitterly cold temperatures are striking the area starting today and going throughout the weekend.   

Shane Hux with the Missouri Highway Patrol Troop H says as these conditions ravage the area 

"We’re not advising any type of travel, unless it’s absolutely necessary,” Hux tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  “It’s kind of nice that it’s on a weekend, but yet that’s when a lot of people get out and do some traveling.” 

Knowing people will have to travel this weekend, Hux says to be sure your vehicle is road worthy and to be prepared for the worst 

“Have some blankets in there, extra coats, hats, gloves, warm shoes, and then make sure your cell phone is fully charged, have an extra charger with you,” Hux explains.  “If you’re going on long distance travel, medications, take those with you.” 

Hux says every trooper available will be out patrolling during this winter storm, but there still may be delayed response due to the weather, so it's best to be prepared.  He adds if you do have to travel, and you become stranded, it's best to stay in your car 

"Reason why that’s important is because we have seen people who exit their vehicle, are then struck by vehicles, so it’s a lot safer for you to be inside your vehicle,” Hux says.  “But you want to make sure that your vehicle is not in a snow drift, and your exhaust is covered up with snow to cause that carbon monoxide.” 

Hux says when it comes to the first winter event of the year, people usually aren't as prepared, but luckily this isn't the first of this winter 

“We hope that people adhere to the advance warnings that have been in place by the National Weather Service, and like I said, just avoid at all costs any unnecessary travel,” Hus says.

MSHP advises avoiding unnecessary travel as winter weather ravages the area

Traffic has resumed on Atchison County Route F near Westboro following the successful reopening of the Rock Creek Bridge on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

 The Missouri Department of Transportation, alongside contractor Emery Sapp &amp; Sons, Inc., completed the deck replacement ahead of schedule, restoring access to a route that had been closed since October 20, 2025.

This project was part of a multi-bridge improvement initiative aimed at extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure in the region. In addition to the Rock Creek Bridge, the project included deck replacements for the Mill Creek Bridge on Holt County Route T and the U.S. Route 59 Bridge over Interstate 29.

Rock Creek Bridge reopens in Atchison County

Extreme cold temperatures hitting the region are forcing schools to cancel classes for Friday with wind chills as low as -13 expected to hit the area and some snowfall expected this weekend.&nbsp;

There is a Cold Weather Advisory in effect from the National Weather Service until midnight on Saturday.&nbsp; A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 6pm on Friday to 6pm on Sunday.

On Thursday evening, the King City School District, the South Holt School District, and the West Nodaway School District all canceled classes due to the cold wind chills plaguing the area.&nbsp;

Throughout the remainder of Thursday night, the Chillicothe School District, the Maryville School District, the Maysville School District, the Mound City School District, and the North Nodaway School District all canceled classes as well.&nbsp; North Nodaway students will have an AMI day with learning at home.&nbsp;

(By MATT PIKE)Extreme cold temperatures hitting the region are forcing schools to cancel classes for Friday with wind chills as low as -13 expected to hit the area and some snowfall expected this weekend.&nbsp;There is a Cold Weather Advisory in effect from the National Weather Service until midnight on Saturday.&nbsp; A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 6pm on Friday to 6pm on Sunday.On Thursday evening, the King City School District, the South Holt School District, and the West Nodaway School District all canceled classes due to the cold wind chills plaguing the area.&nbsp;Throughout the remainder of Thursday night, the Chillicothe School District, the Maryville School District, the Maysville School District, the Mound City School District, and the North Nodaway School District all canceled classes as well.&nbsp; North Nodaway students will have an AMI day with learning at home.&nbsp;The Northeast Nodaway School District, the Stanberry School District, the Stewartsville School District, and the Union Star School District also called off school Friday.&nbsp; In Kansas, the Atchison School District and the Hiawatha School District have canceled classes.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Falls City Public Schools in Nebraska have also called off classes and activities for the day with the extreme cold.For more school closures that come in prior to this article being updated, you can click <a href="https://www.680kfeq.com/closing/#!/">HERE</a>.(You can follow Matt on X @KfeqMatt.)

The 37th annual Midland Empire Farm, Home, and Rural Lifestyle Show is returning to Civic Arena in St. Joseph this weekend.

Event director, Cindi Cornelius says the event is family friendly with something for everyone. "We love having the kids show up. We have a kid's petting zoo and a kid's activity area upstairs as well, along with a lot of shopping vendors."

With nearly 100 vendors expected to participate at the farm show, Cornelius says she's excited to utilize the space at Civic Arena since the renovations. "We've struggled since Covid but we're back to using both levels this year. The restrooms have been expanded up and down, and the facility looks fantastic, so we're excited."

Cornelius says more food options have been added this year, some of which include Texas Roadhouse, The Enchilada Lady, and The Quilted Cookie. "We'll also have kettle corn, canned pickles, quail eggs, jams, jellies, breads, and brownies, so something for everyone. There will definitely be plenty of food for folks to purchase."

Attendees can also register to win a $250 DeWalt gift card from Family Center Farm and Home, with one winner each day.

Saturday only will feature a free MO Child Identification program.

The farm show takes place Jan. 23 and 24. Hours on Friday are 10:00 a.m.&nbsp; - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.

37th annual Midland Empire Farm Show in St. Joseph this weekend

Citizens, business leaders, educators, and government officials from Northwest Missouri are set to gather in Jefferson City February&nbsp; 3rd &amp; 4th for Great Northwest Day, an annual event aiming to showcase the region’s strengths and advocating for its legislative priorities.

The event is designed to educate state lawmakers about the critical issues facing the Northwest region and promote the region as a vital contributor to the Show-Me State’s economic and community success.

Participants will be recognized on the House and Senate floors before taking part in panel discussions focused on key regional priorities. A reception will allow attendees to connect with legislators, and state department leaders. It will also feature the presentation of the Northwest Missouri Citizen of the Year award.

The Great Northwest Priorities Committee has identified six focus areas for the upcoming legislative session: expanding access to rural health care, increasing child care availability, investing in higher education, supporting K–12 education, expanding workforce housing, and ensuring sustainable tax reform.

Registration is $80 through this Tuesday, January 27. Organizers are anticipating participation to exceed 250 attendees.

Great Northwest Day returns February 3 & 4

Savannah will not be getting a new aquatics facility after all.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Instead, after several discussions with professionals, the Andrew County Aquatics Initiative has decided to keep and renovate the current pool facility in Savannah.&nbsp;&nbsp;

President Diane Gould says after reviewing the pool with the professionals, it showed the&nbsp;facility&nbsp;was in&nbsp;good shape, but needed some work&nbsp;

“They came to the conclusion that we could have a really nice facility that, to anyone who didn’t know, will appear to be and will function like&nbsp;a&nbsp;brand-new&nbsp;facility for under $1 million,” Gould tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post&nbsp;

Gould says a new facility, that was&nbsp;essentially the&nbsp;same as what already existed in Savannah, would have cost around&nbsp;$6 million&nbsp;to build.&nbsp;

The fundraising goal for the project is still short by around&nbsp;$165,000.&nbsp; A trivia night will be held on March 21st, which is also when the Andrew County Aquatics Initiative hopes to hit the goal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gould says today will begin the first steps towards reopening the pool as they get ready for renovations at the facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There is a company coming out to do what is called a pressure test on the pool to make sure that&nbsp;we’re&nbsp;leak tight,&nbsp;we’ve&nbsp;done a few things to get prepared for that,&nbsp;change some&nbsp;valves and&nbsp;fixed a few things,” Gould explains&nbsp;

Gould says once that test gets passed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As long as we get an A+ on&nbsp;that,&nbsp;we will be pushing forward and probably, hopefully breaking ground in a few weeks,” Gould says.&nbsp;
