&nbsp;President Trump on Tuesday signed a memorandum directing Secretary Kennedy&nbsp;to ensure transparency and accuracy in direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising and Dr. Makary&nbsp;at the FDA&nbsp;to enforce the prescription drug advertising provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

In 1962, the Congress vested the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the authority to regulate prescription drug advertising.&nbsp; These advertisements can mislead the public about the risks and benefits, encourage medications over lifestyle changes, inappropriately intervene in the physician-patient relationship, and advantage expensive drugs over cheaper generics.

The FDA has historically stipulated that a manufacturer, packer, or distributor must provide the public with materially complete information that fairly balances both the benefits and the risks of the drug.&nbsp; Over time, however, the FDA’s requirements have permitted drug companies to include less information, particularly in broadcast advertising, and drug manufacturer advertising has skyrocketed in recent decades.<a></a>

My Administration will ensure that the current regulatory framework for drug advertising results in fair, balanced, and complete information for American consumers.&nbsp;

The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall therefore take appropriate action to ensure transparency and accuracy in direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising, including by increasing the amount of information regarding any risks associated with the use of any such prescription drug required to be provided in prescription drug advertisements, to the extent permitted by applicable law.&nbsp; The Commissioner of Food and Drugs shall take appropriate action to enforce the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act’s prescription drug advertising provisions, and otherwise ensure truthful and non-misleading information in direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertisements. &nbsp;

This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a fatal shooting in. Topeka have made an arrest.

Just after 7:30a.m. September 1, police responded to a shooting&nbsp;in the 100 block of NW Holman Street in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell. First responders located 30-year-old Cody Bush of Topeka with&nbsp;life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the investigation, police announced Monday they arrested 42-year-old Justin Shumway, 42, of Topeka. He is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp;Murder in the 1st Degree and Aggravated Robbery.

Police: Kansas man jailed for robbery, murder

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement investigating another homicide in Kansas City have identified the victim as 23-year-old Kenneth Hutt,&nbsp;according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

Just before 11:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 8200 block of Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri on a shooting call.

On arrival officers were directed inside the business there where they located a Hutt unresponsive on the ground. Officers rendered aid to the victim and summoned EMS to the scene who declared the victim deceased.

Homicide detectives are investigating and canvassing for witnesses. Preliminary investigation indicates that Hutt entered the business shortly before the shooting and had an interaction with one or more additional patrons that were also inside the business. That interaction escalated to gunfire and Hutt was struck. There is no known suspect information at this time and no one is in custody.

 US steps up military operations in the Caribbean

The legislation would make it nearly impossible for constitutional amendments to pass through the initiative petition process

The Missouri House gave initial approval Monday to legislation that would increase the threshold to pass constitutional amendments proposed through initiative petition.

The bill passed largely along partisan lines, with five Republicans voting in opposition. It needs to be approved by the House one more time before heading to the Senate. If it passes that chamber, it goes on the ballot for voter approval.

Under the proposal, constitutional amendments put on the ballot by voters would need a simple majority statewide and a majority in all eight congressional districts to pass. This means that a small percentage of the state’s voters could defeat any ballot measure.&nbsp;

During last year’s general election, 311,915 votes were cast in the 1st District out of the state’s 2,960,266 votes. So 156,000 voters — or about 5.3% of the statewide vote — could prevent a measure from passing.

Constitutional amendments placed on the ballot by state lawmakers would not have the same standard. Only citizen-led initiative petitions would be affected.

The bill initially also targeted changes to state law placed on the ballot through the initiative petition process. But the proposal’s sponsor — Republican state Rep. Ed Lewis of Moberly — said during Monday’s debate that he wanted to “decouple” changes to state statute from constitutional amendments.

“If we’re to change the constitution, there should be broad support,” he said, “support in each congressional district.”&nbsp;

State lawmakers, in concert with changes to the initiative petition process, are&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/missouri-lawmakers-begin-work-on-trump-backed-congressional-redistricting-plan/">considering a new congressional map under a request from President Donald Trump</a>.

The amendment also bans ballot measure campaigns from accepting contributions from foreign nationals, aligning the resolution with&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.mo.gov/press-releases/archive/governor-kehoe-announces-special-session-congressional-redistricting-and" target="_blank">Gov. Mike Kehoe’s request</a>.

Earlier this year, the legislature passed a law&nbsp;<a href="https://www.senate.mo.gov/25info/BTS_Web/Bill.aspx?SessionType=R&amp;BillID=330" target="_blank">barring foreign spending on state ballot measures</a>.

State Rep. David Tyson Smith, a Democrat from Columbia, asked why Lewis had this piece in the legislation since the spending is already illegal.

Lewis said it would add the restrictions to the Missouri Constitution, whereas they are currently only enacted in state law.

Smith labeled the provision “ballot candy” aimed at tricking voters into supporting changing the initiative petition process.&nbsp;

“It is extremely sloppy when it talks about foreign adversaries,” he said. “But the reason it was left in here is for ballot candy.”

The proposed summary that would appear on the ballot next year leads with a ban on foreign nationals “providing funding to influence ballot measure elections.”

Through recent ballot measures, Missourians have legalized abortion and recreational use of marijuana and voted to increase the minimum wage and mandate paid-sick leave. In November,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/11/05/missouri-voters-overturn-states-near-total-abortion-ban/">the abortion-rights amendment</a>&nbsp;passed with just shy of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/election-results-2024/missouri/?r=83071" target="_blank">52% of the vote</a>&nbsp;with large support from the state’s urban, more-populated areas. Voters in all but eight of Missouri’s 115 counties opposed the amendment.

BOONE COUNTY —The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Harrisburg Missouri.

The man fatally shot during the incident on September 7, has been identified as 31-year-old Ty B. Lewis of Columbia, according to the MSHP.

The Patrol released no additional details.

Just before 9 p.m. Sunday, Boone County deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance involving weapons in the 200 block of Railroad Street in Harrisburg, Missouri, according to a media release.

 A caller had notified Boone County Joint Communications that they had received information from a subject at that location who advised a man was screaming and waving a firearm. Shortly after 9:00 pm, deputies arrived on scene and contacted a 31-year-old man, later identified as Lewis who was armed with a firearm. 

During the encounter, Lewis failed to obey commands and moved toward deputies, which resulted in him being shot and killed by Sheriff’s Office personnel.

Patrol IDs Missouri man who died in officer shooting 

The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is attempting to identify the a suspect invoved in an aggravated assault that occurred in the area of E 23rd Street and Indiana Ave on August 4 at 11:38p.m.

Security camera images show someone in a sweatshirt and sweatpants with a plaid backpack and hat. Police released no additional informtion.

Anyone who can identify the suspect or provide information is asked to contact the Assault Squad at 816-234-5227 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

KCPD asks for help to ID alleged aggravated assault suspect

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– Catherine L. Hanaway was sworn in Monday at 10:00 a.m. as Missouri’s 45th Attorney General in a private ceremony at the Missouri Supreme Court Building, according to a statement form Attorney General's office.

She took the oath of office on her son John’s Bible, administered by the Honorable Ginger K. Gooch, her former law partner and a judge on the Supreme Court of Missouri.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as Missouri’s 45th Attorney General,”&nbsp;said Attorney General Hanaway. “I view this position as a job to fight crime, protect Missouri families, and defend the freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution. My commitment is to serve Missourians by enforcing the law as written and upholding the rule of law. There is much to do, and I am ready to begin.

Catherine Hanaway sworn in as Missouri’s 45th attorney general

Several states say pharmacists must continue providing shots.

Several states, including Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York and Pennsylvania, announced last week that they would be breaking with restrictive eligibility policies unveiled last week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the newly approved COVID-19 vaccines for the fall season.

In New York, Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Friday morning to authorize pharmacists to provide the shot to anyone who desires it for the next 30 days, which can be renewed.

“When they said that they are not going to be requiring COVID shots and other vaccinations for our families, I said, ‘No, here in New York we will make parents have the option.’ If you want your child to have a COVID shot, it should be available to you and it should be covered by insurance,” Hochul&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNiPowR3Kso" target="_blank">said</a>&nbsp;during a news conference Friday morning, where she signed the order.

“So what I’m doing now is signing an executive order, because extreme times call for extreme measures. And this is the power I have to use in the interim until we are able to have the legislature get back in January and pass legislation that mandates this.”

Previous FDA policy recommended that COVID-19 vaccine booster shots be made available to anyone 6 months or older regardless of their health status. But in August, the federal agency announced restrictions for the new shot.

The FDA limited access to the vaccines to people who are 65 and older and to younger people with at least one underlying health condition, such as asthma or obesity, that would put them at risk of developing a severe illness without a booster shot. Children are eligible only if a medical provider is consulted. Additionally, the Pfizer vaccine, one of the three that were approved, will no longer be available for any child under 5.

“The American people demanded science, safety, and common sense. This framework delivers all three,” U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote on social media platform&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/SecKennedy/status/1960742897201872969" target="_blank">X</a>&nbsp;on Aug. 27.

Other states are also taking measures to ensure more people can get access to the vaccines.

On Thursday, Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mass.gov/doc/coverage-for-vaccines-bulletin/download" target="_blank">ordered</a>&nbsp;health insurers in the state to continue covering the vaccine. The state also issued an order to allow pharmacies to continue providing shots to residents above the age of 5.

Massachusetts is “leading efforts to create a public health collaboration with states in New England and across the Northeast committed to safeguarding public health as the federal government backs away from its responsibilities,” the governor’s office said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mass.gov/news/governor-healey-announces-immediate-steps-to-ensure-vaccine-availability-in-massachusetts-amid-trump-rfk-rollbacks" target="_blank">release</a>.

This week, the State Board of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania held a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pa.gov/governor/newsroom/2025-press-releases/state-board-of-pharmacy-votes-to-protect-vaccine-access-across-p" target="_blank">special meeting</a>&nbsp;to vote to bypass federal vaccine recommendations and allow pharmacists to continue administering COVID-19 vaccines.

“Health care decisions should be up to individuals — not the federal government and certainly not RFK Jr. My Administration will continue to protect health care access for all Pennsylvanians,” Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pa.gov/governor/newsroom/2025-press-releases/state-board-of-pharmacy-votes-to-protect-vaccine-access-across-p" target="_blank">said</a>.

States break with FDA restrictions on COVID vaccines, ensuring broader access

KANSAS CITY—A child died in an accident just before 2p.m. Sunday at a residence in the 8100 Block of E 96th Terrace near James A. Reed Road in Kansas City, Missouri.

According to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina, a&nbsp;Silver SUV ran over a toddler in the driveway of the home. The toddler was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased shortly after by the medical staff. Police identiried the driver of the vehicle who remained at the scene.&nbsp;

The incident remains under investigation.

BUTLER COUNTY —Three people avoided injury after an unusual accident that occurred just after 5p.m. Sunday in Butler County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1943 Boeing Aircraft piloted by Ryan Stewart, 68, Benton, was on a short approach to the south facing runway at Stearman Field in Benton.&nbsp;

 The aircraft's landing gear struck a 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by Rebeca Rodriguez, 71, Benton, who was eastbound on Southwest 30th Street. The impact caused the aircraft to strike the ground and flip over on to its top.

The pilot, a passenger on plane and Rodriguez were not injured. The accident remains under investigation.

Small plane clips car while landing at Kansas airport

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a chase near Kansas City.

Just after 8:30 a.m. September 5, sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for expired tags traveling northbound on Interstate 49 from Archie, Missouri, according to the Cass County Sheriff's office.

Deputies pursued the car into rural Peculiar, where the vehicle traveled off road and the driver got out of the vehicle. The driver then ran from the vehicle for a short time before deputies caught up with him. He’s been identified as 34-year-old Shannon Barwick of Exeter, Missouri.

The vehicle and trailer attached to it were confirmed to be stolen. Barwick has been charged with Aggravated Fleeing a Stop/Detention and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle - 1st Degree&nbsp; He’s being held at the Cass County Jail with no bond allowed. 

The passenger has been identified as 39-year-old John Gray of Goodman, Missouri. Gray had four active felony warrants from two separate counties at the time of his arrest. Gray had two from McDonald County, Missouri (Stealing/$750 or more and Domestic Assault - 3rd Degree)  and two from Newton County, Missouri (Burglary - 1st Degree/Domestic Assault 3rd- Degree and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle - 1st Degree/Motor Vehicle Stealing/Watercraft/Aircraft). He’s currently being held at the Cass County Jail.&nbsp;

🎥 Trump at the U.S. Open final: Cheers, boos and long security lines

TOPEKA — In a rare moment of reprieve for U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as he faced&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/09/04/repub/rfk-jr-battles-with-members-of-us-senate-panel-over-vaccines-removal-of-cdc-director/">a grueling group of senators</a>&nbsp;Thursday, U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas gave him the opportunity to explain his views on vaccines and leadership.

Democrats and Republicans alike expressed their distaste and concern for Kennedy’s decisions as leader of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during a roughly three-hour hearing before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. Kennedy defended staff turnover, the erosion of vaccine investment and funding stalls.

But Marshall spent his allotted five minutes leveling with the secretary.

“One of your themes for the CDC is transparency,” Marshall said.

Part of that transparency, he said, is sharing what Kennedy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention know about vaccines so parents can be better equipped to make decisions. An aide standing behind Marshall held a large sign containing a graphic depicting the current CDC recommendations for vaccinations for children.

“By the time they’re 18 months, they’ve had 18 jabs,” Marshall said. “By the time they get to be old enough to vote, they have 76 jabs.”

An aide moved the sign with the graphic to the side to reveal another sign, which read in bright red type, “76 JABS!”

Marshall, a former OB-GYN who said he’s delivered 5,000 babies, also said he doesn’t understand why newborns are given a hepatitis vaccine if a mother has no risk factors. The hepatitis vaccine is typically the first vaccine a newborn receives.

Hepatitis B is most commonly transmitted from mother to child at birth, and an estimated 1.1 million people died from hepatitis B infections in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.

Marshall said vaccines should be treated like medication and asked how Kennedy uses transparency to do just that.

Kennedy agreed with Marshall, confronting accusations that he is anti-vaccine.

“Saying I’m anti-vaccine is like saying I’m anti-medicine,” Kennedy said. “I’m pro-medicine, but I understand some medicines harm people. Some of them have risks. Some of them have benefits that outweigh those risks for some populations.”

Marshall said he and Kennedy are fighting to empower parents to make their own decisions surrounding vaccines.

“I guess before the press labels me wrong, I’m not anti-vaccine either,” Marshall said, expressing support for the MMR, DPT, polio and smallpox vaccines.

Marshall also gave Kennedy time to clear up any confusion about his stance on the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, which Kennedy oversees, more than 1.2 million deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 as of Aug. 30. In an estimated 87% of those deaths, COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death, and it was listed as a contributing cause in the remaining deaths.

Earlier in the hearing, Kennedy said he didn’t know the total COVID-19 death toll in the U.S., refuting existing estimates of both the death toll and vaccine efficacy rates. He blamed “data chaos” at the CDC, which he also oversees.

Marshall agreed with Kennedy, articulating the difference between the number of people dying from COVID and the number of those who died with COVID.

“The calculus is different and it’s complicated,” Kennedy said, “and, you know, if you want to just turn everything into a sound bite, it makes it — you can’t have a grown-up conversation.”

RFK Jr., Kan. U.S. senator find common ground on vaccines at contentious hearing

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just before 11:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 8200 block of Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri. on a shooting call, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

On arrival officers were directed inside the business there where they located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive on the ground. Officers rendered aid to the victim and summoned EMS to the scene who declared the victim deceased.

Homicide detectives are investigating and canvassing for witnesses. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim entered the business shortly before the shooting and had an interaction with one or more additional patrons that were also inside the business. That interaction escalated to gunfire and the victim was struck. There is no known suspect information at this time and no one is in custody.

KCPD: One dead in gas station shooting

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas police K9 returned to work last week after being stabbed while assisting during an arrest last month.

 After a full recovery and medical clearance, K9 Dagger returned to full duty, according to a social media report from the Shawnee Police Department.&nbsp;

Just before 4a.m. August 5, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department was dispatched to disturbance at a home in the 900 block of Riverview, according to a media release.

At the home, officers spoke with the caller who said a family member had returned to the. home after an earlier assault involving a knife. When officers approached the home to talk to the man, he barricaded himself inside.

The Shawnee Police Department assisted and brought K9 Dagger, a Belgian Malinois, to the scene. When officers went inside the home to take make an arrest, the suspect stabbed the K9 officer.

Dagger was transported to a local veterinarian and was expected to make a full recovery. Dagger has been with the Shawnee Police Department since 2023.

At 7:30 a.m., the suspect surrendered and was arrested.&nbsp;

In 2024 the Kansas legislature passed&nbsp; “Bane’s Law,” that increases penalties for inflicting harm on law enforcement animals, including horses. The felony crime is now punishable by a minimum of 90 days in jail and a minimum fine of $10,000.

Governor Kelly vetoed the bill but on was overridden 105-20 in the House and 29-10 in the Senate.

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire and a later a house fire in Kansas City, Missouri.

Just after 6:30p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported apartment fire in the area of 18th Street and Brooklyn Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.&nbsp;

 On arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke from a two-story structure off of 18th Street and Euclid.  An offensive fire attack was ordered, and interior operations were initiated using multiple handlines. Two separate apartments were involved in the fire, which was brought "under control" by companies on scene at 7:02 p.m. Searches of the structure came back all clear. There were no injuries reported.

Just before 8p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported fire in the 5900 block of Bellefontaine Avenue, according to Nolan.

Crews reported smoke and fire showing from a 1-story home on arrival. Offensive operations were ordered, and two handlines were advanced into the structure to extinguish the fire. 

&nbsp;The fire was brought under control at 8:09 p.m. Companies on scene continued with salvage and overhaul operations while extinguishing hot spots. There were no injuries reported.

Two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, matched all six numbers in Saturdayk night’s Powerball® drawing and will split a $1.787 billion jackpot, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The winning numbers in the Saturday, Sept. 6 Powerball drawing were white balls 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and red Powerball 17. The Power Play® multiplier was 2.

With final ticket sales, the Powerball jackpot came in at $1.787 billion – making it the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won, trailing only the world-record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won in California on Nov. 7, 2022.

Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million. Both prize options are before taxes. If a winner selects the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5-percent each year.

U.S. lotteries are reminding players to check their tickets carefully, as cash prizes are also awarded for matching the red Powerball or other numbers in the winning combination.

More than 9.9 million tickets won cash prizes in last night’s Powerball drawing.

Nationwide, 18 tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million prizes. The $1 million-winning tickets were sold in California (2), Colorado, Florida, Illinois (2), Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York (2), Ohio (2), Oregon, Texas (2) and West Virginia. Note: In California, prize payout amounts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners.

Two tickets matched all five white balls and increased their winnings to $2 million each, by including the Power Play® option for $1 more at purchase. The $2 million-winning tickets were sold in Kansas and Texas.

There were also 232 tickets that won $50,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB) and 90 tickets that won $100,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB + Power Play).

In the Double Play® drawing, two tickets in Florida and Maine won $500,000 each after matching all five black balls. Double Play® is a $1 add-on feature that allows players to play their Powerball numbers, again, in a separate drawing for a chance to win up to $10 million. Double Play drawings are held after each Powerball drawing.

Last night’s Powerball drawing was the 42nd drawing since the jackpot was previously won in California on May 31, 2025 - setting a new game record for the longest jackpot run.

For the next drawing on Monday night, the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million. The 10X Power Play® multiplier will be available for play since the advertised jackpot is below $150 million.

Powerball lottery player in Mo. will split estimated $1.8 billion jackpot

KANSAS CITY– A Mexican national has pleaded guilty in federal court this week to conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, according to the United State's Attorney.

Lisandro Garcia-Ramirez, 23, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lajuana M. Counts to one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens. Garcia-Ramirez was arrested on Feb. 20, 2025, traveling on I-70 in Saline County, Mo. Garcia-Ramirez admitted to transporting individuals he knew were present in the United States illegally.

Under federal statutes, Garcia-Ramirez is subject to a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of Garcia-Ramirez will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore. It was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security – Homeland Security Investigations.

Mexican national admits transporting illegals on I-70

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A federal grand jury in Kansas City, Kansas, returned an indictment charging two former Wyandotte County District Court bookkeepers with stealing $900,000 from the Court, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Julia Roberts, 65, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Vicki Robinson, 63, of Bonner Springs were indicted on one count of wire fraud conspiracy as well as individual counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

As part of their duties, Roberts and Robinson were responsible for collecting and depositing funds into the Wyandotte County Clerk Office’s bank account.

Roberts and Robinson are accused of devising a scheme to steal incoming cash between January 2018 and February 2023. They allegedly concealed the ongoing thefts by using the clerk of court’s signature on fraudulent checks that they generated without authorization. 

According to court documents, the fraudulent checks appeared to be facially valid and were drawn on and deposited into the county clerk office’s bank account, creating a corresponding debit and credit—which eliminated fluctuation in the deposit amount on the bank statements but concealed the stolen cash in the Court’s accounting system.

Roberts and Robinson made their initial court appearances on September 3, 2025, and September 5, 2025, respectively, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Angel D. Mitchell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.
