U.S. corn stocks entering the new marketing year were sharply higher than a year ago. USDA says old-crop corn stocks totaled 2.10 billion bushels as of September 1st, up 35 percent from last year. About 787 million bushels were stored on farms, a 22-percent increase, while off-farm stocks climbed 44 percent to 1.31 billion bushels. Corn disappearance from June through August totaled 3.20 billion bushels, slightly higher than the same period last year.

Soybean stocks moved the other direction, falling 3 percent from a year earlier. All-wheat stocks dropped 14 percent to 1.85 billion bushels. The larger corn carryout adds another bearish factor for farmers as harvest gets underway and producers continue watching fall price levels closely.
