Erma Ilene Humbert the daughter of David and Ethel (Lord) Sligar, was born in Fremont County, Iowa, on June 27, 1922. Ilene passed away at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, on February 9, 2026, at the age of 103.
Ilene attended schools in Iowa, South Dakota and Missouri. During World War II she was employed at two defense plants in Council Bluffs Scientific and Howard Manufacturing Company. Later she was employed at J.C. Penney and Jennie Edmundson Hospital, both in Council Bluffs.It was in Council Bluffs that Ilene met Carl Humbert and they were united in marriage in Troy, Kansas on January 19, 1945. To this union one son, Richard Lynn was born on January 10, 1949. Most of their married life was spent in Council Bluffs, with a short time in Las Vegas, Nevada. In November of 1982, they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she resided until her death.
Ilene was preceded in death by her parents David and Ethel Sligar; husband, Carl Humbert; grandson Richard Humbert; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Nina Sligar and James and Julia Sligar. Survivors include her son, Richard Humbert of Sidney, Iowa; her brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Sandy Sligar of Hemingford, Nebraska; nieces, Kay (Sligar Bebout), Tammie (Sligar) Carpenter, and Denise (Sligar) Tackett.
Per Ilene's wishes private family burial will be held in the Grandview Cemetery in rural Sidney. Memorials may be directed to the family.
