Marlis Lavonnie Raines Currin, affectionately known as Marlis, was a cherished soul whose life illuminated the paths of many. Born on April 12, 1940, in the heart of Iowa, Marlis spent her entire life within the state, enriching the lives of those around her with her unwavering kindness and joy. On March 18, 2026, Marlis passed away peacefully in the same state where she first drew breath, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication. Marlis was a proud alumna of Villisca Community schools, where she received an education that would set the foundation for her lifelong commitment to her community.
Her career was a testament to her nurturing spirit, having worked as a nurse aide at Good Samaritan in Villisca, providing care and comfort to those in need. Her work ethic and versatility led her to various roles, including positions at Villisca Meat Locker, D & L, TRACO in Red Oak, and Burcliff in Corning. However, it was her two-decade tenure as the beloved lunch lady for the Villisca Community School District from which she retired that truly captured the essence of her dedication to her community. A devout Christian, Marlis was a pillar of faith in her church, the Advent Christian Church. Her involvement went beyond mere attendance; she embodied the spirit of service, assisting in any way she could, always with a smile that could light up the room.
Marlis had an array of interests that reflected her love for the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid gardener, taking pride in canning tomatoes and tending to her flower gardens that bloomed with vibrancy and care. Her bird feeders were a sanctuary for the local avian population, and she spent countless hours watching the birds from her window, finding joy in the tranquility they brought to her days. Her early years were spent along the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan, where she engaged in the thoughtful art of picking rocks, later using these natural treasures to enhance the beauty of her gardens.
The love she had for her family was evident in the way she supported her grandchildren, never missing a chance to cheer them on at school sporting events and programs. Marlis's life was one of selfless service and boundless love. Her presence was a comforting constant in the lives of those she touched, and her memory will be cherished in the hearts of many.
