Martin Schieber, 88, passed away at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Missouri, on July 13, 2025.
Martin was born to Lawrence and Eleanor (Lager) Schieber on August 11, 1936, on the family farm at Conception Junction, Missouri. He grew up in rural Conception Junction, Missouri, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954.
Martin served in the United States Army at Fort Bliss, Texas. After his honorable discharge on February 15, 1962, Martin returned to Nodaway County where he met and married Betty Shelton on October 24, 1964. He farmed his entire life, first at Ravenwood, Missouri, then, for most of his career, near Pumpkin Center, Missouri.
Martin and Betty raised four children and were blessed with many family moments including vacations, sporting events, farm work, and prayer nights. Martin was particularly fond of teasing those he loved.
Martin was ordained a Permanent Deacon on October 28, 1976, and served at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Maryville, Missouri. Betty and Martin worked on various married couple and family ministries during his diaconate.
Martin was a member of American Legion Post 464 and Knights of Columbus Council 1339. In retirement, Martin and Betty moved to Maryville where Martin enjoyed socializing and golfing with friends.
After a long illness through which Martin cared for her, Betty preceded him in death on January 7, 2014.
Martin was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers JF (Fred), LJ (Butch), Edward and Andrew Schieber, as well as, his sisters Beatrice Rogers and Agnes Welliver.
Martin resided at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Missouri, the last 11 years of his life where he made many friends and was lovingly cared for by the staff who became extended members of his family.
Martin is survived by children: Steve (Kittie Jane), Grand Island, Nebraska; Tim (Traci), Hamilton, Missouri; Julie (Warren) McConkey, Barnard, Missouri; and Marla (Cory) McAlpin, Villisca, Iowa. He is also survived by sisters, Martha (Doug) Copley, Sister Monica Schieber, and sister-in-law Rita Schieber. Additional survivors include Martin’s pride and joy, his grandchildren Johnathan (Tim), Emily, and TJ (Alex) Schieber; Marissa (Matthew) Curran; Matt (Shelby), Michael (Fernanda), Mallory, and Meaghan McConkey; and Wyatt (Kate) and Rylie McAlpin. He is also survived by seven great grandsons whom he adored.
Rosary will be held Friday, July 18th at 6 p.m. followed by visitation until 8 p.m. at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church in Maryville, Missouri.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am, Saturday, July 19th at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church under the care of Price Funeral Home. Military funeral honors will be presented by American Legion Post 464, and burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Maryville, Missouri.
